HELP ME - I never want to see another bl.**dy fishfinger!

Ok, so I have 3yr old dd and 16mth old ds. They would eat fishfingers all the time by choice. Ds is refusing to let me feed him anymore so the days of mushed up versions of our food are gone (sigh). I really need help with ideas for food that will appeal to dd but ds can manage too. He is starting to use spoon but is very hit and miss so nothing runny!

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP.

Thanks

My two will eat plain steamed white fish, which I give them with chipsd and peas. they probably eat that better than fish fingers in fact.

or there's omlette with cheese, peas, bits of tomato etc in it. you can get them to break the eggs for you (if you're brave).

erm or pasta - might be messy I guess but mine will eat it plain.

meatballs/burgers (they don't have to be full of crap)?

sarnies?

You could try Sweet potato/potato wedges, parsnip chips, roasted butternut squash, Home made chicken nuggets, Home made burgers, spag bol, cottage pie, home made pizza you can then put on whatever topping you fancy.

i make chicken gougon/nugget type things by slicing chicken breast into strips, dipping in egg and then dipping in breadcrumbs made by grating wholemeal bread and mixing a bit of paprika or mild chilli powder, and then bake them in the oven.they are yummy and can be picked up-very easy to eat.serve with healthy oven chips or home made wedges.

I make home made burgers because dh is wheat intolerant so I can't buy them. Dead simple, I fry up some bacon bits and onion, whizz them up in the food processor, mix with the mince and some herbs and stuff (fresh thyme is great), shape into burger shapes, et voila. I fry them first and then finish in the oven - or rather, I fry them and wander off to drink wine whilst dh puts them in the oven.

mine love chicken cooked with homey and a touch of mustard - you can just cut it into strips and pasta doesn't have to be too messy - just dont use too much sauce, enough to coat it. My kids are similar ages and ds2 (17 months) also prefers to feed himself. Another hit which is a bit messier is well cooked scrambled egg with grated cheese and half a tin of low salt baked beans mixed in - I cook it until it is in well-formed lumps!

isn't it a bit of a bind though schneebly? all the hanging around the rougher parts of town for ages in order to get your homey to put on the chicken? removing the tracksuit and all the gold jewellery etc? sounds too complicated.

lol! I am such a fanny! Grin Homey chicken? pmsl!

SSSandy · 13/06/2006 18:28

never thought of grating wholemeal bread. Like that chicken nugget idea. I'll try it.

FrayedKnot · 13/06/2006 18:50

I make breadcrumbs in my liquidiser food blender thingy. Great for using up the crusts / end bits of bread.

maddiebean · 13/06/2006 19:33

Thanks girls. I do love cooking but I never seem to find the time Sad I'm definitely going to try some of those ideas but does anyone have any more that are maybe a little bit quicker. (Please don't be offended, I really like the ideas people have come up with,it's just I'm up to my eyeballs at the moment with grandparents staying for dd's birthday for next 3 days, party on Friday, dh off to NY on business early next week etc etc....)

i think my 12 year old is responsible for the low cod stocks he must have eaten millions of them. Blush

It's amazing what you can hide in pasta
I think from 18 mths my dd existed on penne with a variation of all good things mashed into the sauce
liver
fresh tuna, baked then flaked into the sauce
sweet potatoes
chicken and apricot

if in doubt cheese sauce or creme fraiche it out
in other words get em used to these and stick anything in
DD even chooses the colour now at 3.5 and has such diverse taste she'll eat anything of my plate, coat it in whatever is on hers and declare herself a fan of it

Seriously decent lamb or beef, put in blender with onion, few herbs, bit of marigold bouiilon powder for flavour
Shape into balls, shallow fry, with natural yoghurt and grated cucumber dip
winner!!!!!!!!

Piffle · 13/06/2006 19:45

fast dinner
cheese on toast
beans on toast
pasta and pesto - for the younger baby/child, add more creme fraiche to reduce the salt content
