Lunch box ideas please :)

DS is going into yr1 in September, he had school dinners last year but has asked for packed lunches this year.

So I've brought a lunch box. He's not fussy with anything else but the only sandwiches he will eat are either ham or jam on milk roll Hmm so not really healthy!

So I was thinking...

Ham/jam sandwich
Cheese and cuecumber cubes
Pear
Raisins
Tube yogurt thingy
Homemade flapjack/cookie (nut free)
Carton of juice

School policy is to also take a bottle of water for in class/break time.

Does this sound ok? He has a big appetite?

Any more ideas?

With the funtainer I put it in piping hot and its still piping hot at lunchtime. They have the blow on it sometimes.

I've also got an Aladdin Bento box one that plastic and it doesn't keep it as hot.

Are children really 'targeted' because of the contents of their lunch boxes? Goodness.

notnowbernard · 11/08/2013 22:31

Yes, kids can be mocked for the contents of their packed lunch (prob more y3 up though)

Times have changed. When I told my mum that the dc quite often have hummus sandwiches/bagel/roll for lunch she looked baffled (hummus v exotic to her!)

Thanks SavoyCabbage - much appreciated Smile

I love giving my dc (age 5 and 8) more exotic stuff when I have the time to make it. I don't think they've ever been 'targeted' because of it - in fact dd says the other kids say they want what she's got, instead of their boring sandwiches!

My dcs have been targeted for their weird lunch, but soon the other kids got used to it and started to copy them. Sushi is eaten by quite a few kids.

Mine absolutely love sushi, but I've never thought to send them to school with it. I might try making some veg ones to send in with them. I've been meaning to try making it for ages.

I find sending 'odd' things can be easily balanced out with a nice bit of home made cake... Grin although DS1 never much cared what anyone thought of him and DS3 goes to a SN school where no one appears to care about the contents of his lunch and he would be thrilled to find sushi.

I'm surprised schools won't allow a tube yoghurt but will allow a Fabulous Bakin Boys flapjack...

Midor school lunchbox rules are usually about banning things rather than overall nutrition levels. For some reason people seem to think flapjacks are healthy - they contain huge amounts of sugar - even the home made variety and very few nutrients.
