Snacks for pre-school age children

I know that there must be a lot of previous threads on this, but I can't seem to find them. When I do a search I'm pulling up masses of threads on toddler eating problems (even when I limit to the food topic) so I hope people don't mind me asking again.

DD2 (age 2) in particular is an issue because she's not a fan of breakfast. That means she wants to eat about 10am, but doesn't want to have cereal/toast which she dismisses as 'breakfast food Mummy'.

So I'm after ideas for snacks that I can give both of them (ages 2 and 4) which are semi-healthy, not masses of work and extend beyond my usual range of breadsticks, carrot and chunks of cheese (plus biscuits and crisps).

Any ideas?

I was looking for healthy biscuit recipes for my DS also 2 and have
tried fruit and pancakes, bran muffins, (you can make batter the night before). Baked beans on toast, mushrooms on toast with a bit of parsley and lemon.

See savoury flapjack thread!

Breakfast muffins?
Beat 4 eggs with 250ml cream, add handful grated cheese plus left over veg, seasoning/herbs, chopped ham, tomato, whatever is im fridge/leftovers. Pour in lightly greased muffin tray. Chuck more grated cheese on top. Or use muffin paper cases. Bake at 190 for 12-15 mins.
Good hot or cold.

How about cheese straws and a little fruit? She might also like a savoury muffin or things like scrambled egg, beans, peanut butter or cheese on toast are good too. I'd look on it as a light meal rather than a snack, especially if its her first proper meal of the day.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom · 09/08/2013 18:05

Thanks. Those ideas are great.

I don't mind time preparing beforehand, but TBH (and I know that this might make me sound a bit mean!), I'd prefer not to start cooking at this time of day. The morning is our big clear chunk of time to do stuff - like go out to toddler groups/library/wherever or do art or whatever at home (DD2 still naps after lunch, so the afternoon tends to be quieter). I really like the idea of things I could make in advance and have portable. Savoury flapjacks, the various muffins and cheese straws sound especially good.

I like the idea of lots of the other things too, but I might save them for lunch Smile. DD2 is mushroom obsessed so I'm not sure why I hadn't thought of mushroom on toast as a lunch option before.

Apple slices stuck together with almond butter or peanut butter are good for out and about.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 09/08/2013 19:24

Or oatcakes with Philadelphia and marmite.

MrsPnut · 09/08/2013 19:27

hard boiled eggs with a bit of something to dip it in.

slices of ham wrapped around a small piece of cheese.

I usually provide a small snack plate in the morning that wouldn't look out of place at a continental breakfast.
cooked meat, cheese, egg, yoghurt and some crackers or crisp bread.

My DS likes banana muffins, scotch pancakes with raisins in or scones all which can be frozen after baking a batch.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/08/2013 23:47

We are a but obsessed with blueberry pancakes atm. These are easily portable too. And no, you don't sound mean at all Smile

Cheeseatmidnight · 09/08/2013 23:56

Cbeebies have great snacks on their website - fruity flapjacks are great
Humous and sugar snap peas
Cheese penny biscuits - like cheese straws but rolled and cut
Pitta bread and soft cheese

Cheeseatmidnight · 09/08/2013 23:57

Ooh yes, just remembered apple and banana muffins off of the change for life app

Cheese scones freeze well.
They are very nice spread with guacamole.

Or take porridge oats, seeds, crushed nuts, dedicated coconut, dried fruit - chopped prunes and apricot nice. Mix with condensed milk until its clumpy, not runny, and add a few drops vanilla essence or orange zest before packing down in a greased brownie tin. ( Its easier to pack down wearing rubber gloves! ) Put in 125c oven for about 50 mins. Cut into wedges or cereal bars.

Brush teeth well after though! Dried fruit is like toffee for sticking to teeth - but it's much healthier than granola bars.

Dessicated coconut, FGS iPhone.

Xiaoxiong · 11/08/2013 19:22

If pancakes are not off the menu as too breakfasty, you can make unsweetened whole wheat american style ones, freeze or refrigerate and toast from cold/frozen as needed. You can then roll them round apple slices, spread with a nut butter or jam, or even round a slice of ham and cheese.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom · 11/08/2013 21:36

Oooh, thanks. Lots more ideas since I last looked.
