Who said we had to MAKE cakes, phooooey to that. As long as you love your child thats all that counts. I think M&S are very good at them. I certainly wont be making my DD's cakes. Only cupcakes together one day for fun may be.

Awww relax and give yourself a break - ds won't give 2 hoots that it's not home made!

marthamoo · 11/02/2004 09:40

Twiglett, don't be daft woman! I hereby absolve you from any guilt, henceforth and absolutely. The icing is yuck on those Thomas cakes, btw (well, to adults, my kids loved it )

Twinkie · 11/02/2004 09:41

But if you had made it it would have looked like shit - least this one actually looks professional and he won't be embarrassed infront of his friends!!

You are a great mum afterall!!

SoupDragon · 11/02/2004 10:31

He won't remember anyway. I don't remember any of my birthday cakes and my mother is not even sure she made me any. Seeing as I'm the youngest of 3 this is a real possibility and there's no photographic evidence to prove it either way!

However, polishing my Good Mummy halo for a while (it happens so rarely), I made DS1 a chocolate fudge cake zebra for his 2nd birthday and DS2 was born 6 days later. Of course, DS1 remembers NOTHING of this, ungrateful little wretch

Making gingerbread men and muffins for his party is more than sufficuent, Twiglett.

It's never even occurred to me to make ds a birthday cake. Why bother when M&S do them so well?!

Cam · 11/02/2004 14:30

My dd would never forgive me if I made her a birthday cake, she would want a "proper one"!!!

150percent · 11/02/2004 14:34

Well if you feel that you do have to do a penance, ds1 wants a "Fire-engine" cake for his thrid birthday (Last year he had Thomas from Tescos). He also want a fireman in the fireengine!

We only do shop bought cakes - now I am wondering whether I have to commission one!

MammyShirl · 11/02/2004 14:41

question: how do you know you are a good mum?

answer: you go on mumsnet day and night gathering as much info as possible all for your little/big bundels of joy to have a happier, healthier fun life.

dont feel guilty twiglett, why do us mums expect so much from ourselves? we are all trying to give 100% 24 hours 7 days, we dont need to. im sure your child is very loved and looked after. plus your pregnant - thats the best excuse for everything!!!!!!!

Furball · 11/02/2004 21:13

Warning - Watch out for blue/green poo, unfortunate after effect with Thomas cake.

prufrock · 12/02/2004 12:26

twiglett darling you are ridiculous sometimes. Reading this has made me realise I will have a 15 day old baby on dd's 2nd birthday, so she probably won't even be having a party, let alone a homemade cake. And she will never ever remember.
(did you know Tesco's do really nice gingerbread men)

This thread has really made me laugh at myself. My mum always made me cakes, and I can remember loads of them, even though I can only remember a little about one party, and nothing at all about the presents. And I enjoy making and decorating cakes. So for me making a cake is really important.

Last summer my dad was in ITU for 4 weeks, and I was with him and my mum hundreds of miles from here. I had to dash across the country to be here for my ds1's 6th birthday and party, but I still feel uncomfortable that I bought his cake instead of making it! I know it's illogical, but I really do feel that way.

JennH · 12/02/2004 15:52

Twiglett have you read that book by Alison Pearson i don't know how she does it, where in the opening chapter the mum is battering Sainbury's mince pies to make them look homemade

I think my daughter will be having bought cakes! Nothing wrong with that.
