for a 20mth old toddler. Is there any difference if i buy the sugar free squash and dilute it really well? The baby juice just seems really expensive and doesnt last long.

It's also got a really high sugar content too! I think you'd be better off with normal squash or diluted pure juice.

nothercules · 12/06/2006 18:27

what's wrong with water?

WigWamBam · 12/06/2006 18:28

Sugar-free squash contains all kinds of additives which you may or may not want your baby to have. If you want to give juice, why not diluted pure fresh juice?

LIZS · 12/06/2006 18:30

If you need to offer juice (as opposed to plain water) how about diluting regular fruit juice down with lots of water. Squash contains all sorts of additives and even the sugar-free has an artificial sweetener which is linked to all sorts of problems.

ds beens having water but me and dh have been setting a bad example and have been drinking squash in front of him. Weve allowed him a few sips and nows hes actually learnt how to ask for juice he only says a few other words. Hes obviously bored of water and milk.

Is the baby juice really bad as well

nothercules · 12/06/2006 18:35

Sorry but how can he be bored of water??

Medulla · 12/06/2006 18:37

Baby juice is over priced and has a high sugar content. My dentist told me to save the squash/juice drinks for mealtimes and water in between times.

Twiglett · 12/06/2006 18:38

fresh juice diluted 50:50 with water

apple juice, cranberry juice etc

Twiglett · 12/06/2006 18:39

baby juice is an over-priced marketing con .. seriously get your supermarket's juice

my kids sometimes have it 20% juice 80% water ... it gives the water a tang

but they do drink water too

LIZS · 12/06/2006 18:39

I think if you dressed it up as something fancy if needs be - such as in a bright cup or with an ice cube and straw - he'll drink water anyway. Personally think it best to hold out as long as possible. He really won't know the difference unless you "teach" him !

flutterbee · 12/06/2006 18:42

Its very easy to be bored of water don't be so snappy.

I agree with medulla only give juices at meal times and water the rest of the day.

nothercules · 12/06/2006 18:43

well, I'm nearly 32 and not bored....Why start something that could lead to tooth decay that isnt necessary?

mum2sam · 12/06/2006 18:45

he does drink water but as i said hes actually started asking for juice. He brushes his teeth well and he normally just has a drink with his meals and has milk in between. I have been giving him normal squash but really diluted but just wondered if he shouldnt have it.

Well I sure get bored with water! Never really stopped to ponder the how of it.. I just do!!

flutterbee · 12/06/2006 18:47

Well you are in the minority nothercules, drinks companies wouldn't make the money they do if people didn't get bored of water.

And for what its worth I am 100% certain that water is not the only fluid you drink.

nothercules · 12/06/2006 18:49

No, it's not and I'm pretty certain that dentists do well out of that too.

Medulla · 12/06/2006 18:49

Me too! I couldn't drink just water all day. You're doing a good job with his oral hygiene, I don't see a problem

Twiglett · 12/06/2006 18:50

whilst I think there's no issue with giving kids diluted juice personally I have to say the fact that companies are making money off it doesn't make it right

P&G makes money from Sunny Delight you know .. a helluva lot of money Grin

Twiglett · 12/06/2006 18:51

and also fruit shoots .. very succesful .. sweets too Grin

still I think there's a bit of 'holier than thou' going on here .. again

nothercules · 12/06/2006 18:52

what do you mean by again, twiglett? Yes, I admit to coming across as snappy but I personally see no value in giving sqash or juice to a toddler. Doesnt make me holier than thou surely.

nothercules · 12/06/2006 18:53

although she does have Mcdonalds sometimes.....hmm

SleepyJess · 12/06/2006 18:53

Sadly, Mum2sam, you have innocently picked one of the subjects which Mumsnetters like to get really narky about even when a person just asked a bit of advice.. next they'll be lecturing you on the evils of Fruits shoots.. whether you wanted to know or not!

Point is, yes water is best but people (and babies are people) do enjoy a bit of flavour (funny that!) and so many perfectly good parents aloow their children flavoured water (either with squash or natural juice) which, together with decent dental hygiene habits, will not, in fact, result in the alarming and inevitable demise of every tooth in a child's head..

flutterbee · 12/06/2006 18:53

Don't get me wrong northercules I think water is the best thing to drink not only for your teeth but for your diet, skin, hair the list goes on, but allowing your child to have a very very weak juice with a meal is not shocking or wrong.

nothercules · 12/06/2006 18:54

No, it's not shocking or wrong but I still dont see the point.
