FODMAP diet & the faddy eater

OK, I accept I'm a faddy eater; for years I have existed on the foods I like. Now due to IBS I have to mess about with it

I can't have:
Pulses
Wheat
Juice
Honey
Dairy
Onion
Garlic
Nuts & seeds
Fructose (syrup)
Fructose/glucose (syrup)
Loads of fruit & veg

I don't like:
Eggs
Processed foods
Rice
Pasta
Milk/milk type drinks
Porridge
Sweetners
Alcohol
Coconut
Almond
Citrus
Eggs
Mucked about with stuff

I like:
Cornflakes
Rice krispies
Melon (small serving)
Grapes (small serving)
Raspberry (small serving)
Strawberry (small serving)
Rhubarb
Banana (small serving)
Kiwi
Carrot
Tomato (small serving)
Pepper
Potato
Beetroot
Sweet potato
Garlic oil
Meat (like chicken, lamb, beef, pork ?sausages, ham & bacon)
Fish (Salmon, smoked haddock, smoked salmon, plaice)

But I am bored - now I know I have to be brave; but this is a massive issue for me

I have lost bread & butter & onions & garlic & baked beans & fruit juice. I have never really eaten massively processed foods......

So I need meal help - particularly snacks & lighter meals

Where did you get such advice as to cut out all of these foods? I have had IBS for years and find that one or two things make me worse but most of all stress is the culprit and no matter what I eat or don't eat when my stress levels are high then I get a flare up.

It sounds pretty drastic to just stop eating wheat and dairy. Where will you get your calcium from?

I went to a specialist dietician once and she gave me a list of things to avoid. I spent months avoiding seeds or any kind, pulses, certain fruit and vegetables and dairy. I felt better after a while but this coiincided with a reduction in my stress levels and when the foods were reintroduced gradually no adverse effects were seen so now I eat what i want and try and incorporate yoga and mindfulness into my hectic schedule.

Dietician at the GP surgery - it's been a problem for about 20 yrs this is a last ditch attempt to sort it out (I have had extensive tests)

I think you already know what you need to do - experiment a bit more with food, what's the worst that can happen - you spit it out? There are loads of FodMap recipes online, blogs etc, have you googled? but if you don't want to try new foods I'm not sure how anyone can help.

I didn't know there was stuff on line the dietician said not to google as it was all out of date; I'll look

I think maybe the problems I am having are because of the things I already couldn't eat (Coconut, almond, eggs, citrus, porridge) which added to my hated of 'chemicals disguised as foods' has left me a bit lost

I bought some Spelt flour - now I just need to turn it into bread & I make a mean dairy/egg free ginger cake (I just need to alter it's make up to turn it into chocolate)

But spelt is still wheat - can you tolerate that?

KatyMac · 06/08/2013 08:54

I don't know but it's what the dietician reccommended

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but I'm not an expert, have you tried giving up gluten before?

KatyMac · 06/08/2013 09:29

Back in '94 but it wasn't really considered right then

I'm up for low gluten I think; but I've ended up so anxious about it all now

This website has a FodMap filter on its recipes - I'd rate their recipes too. You can still get ideas online, there's nothing stopping you finding a low FodMap recipe online and then checking it to make sure it complies with your recommended diet...it's really ideas you need that fit with your tastes, that's hard for someone else to do for you, although you'd think the dietician would have been more help.

Thanks - I had my initial appointment with a lovely lady who was being trained; she went of sock & I saw someone else for my starting appt who told me it all wrong

Now I'm seeing her again at the end of the month - I feel very anxious about it & she understands that. My life has been spent reducing the things I eat as they upset me & to lose even more foods is scary nothing I regularly eat is allowed now Sad
