Help! Curry hotter than the sun! Can it be salvaged?

Blimey, it's hot hot hot!

I bought some lovely new mixed spice (not curry but hot stuff). It has chilli and gun powder/rocket fuel in it I think.

My usual curry/harissa mixes are rather mild so I popped in a little less than usual in my spicy soya/veg recipe and it smelled lovely and tasted ok. It seems to have actually got spicier in cooking though. I think my teeth may be melting (although taste is rather nice though).

Is there anything I can add (beyong drowning it in yoghurt) to stop the burn?

(Excuse the picture - when I have the option to add one, I can't resist).

Can you add a couple of tins of tinned tomatoes?

Then just serve it with loads of yogurt on the side and a glass of milk Grin

Can you double up on all the other ingredients?

MyCatHasStaff · 04/08/2013 19:08

Add some sugar, that should help.

KatieLily12 · 04/08/2013 19:08

I think lemon helps? Tomatoes and lemon might be worth a shot

DocMarten · 04/08/2013 19:08

coconut milk?

Earthworms · 04/08/2013 19:08

Coconut milk.

Or

I have just rescued a curry by adding a mug of water, spooning the sauce out with a ladle ( and saving it for freezing later) then topping back up with water.

Earthworms · 04/08/2013 19:09

Prob could add another tin of tomatoes and spoon out the sauce too

I rescued my own 'hotter than the sun' curry with coconut cream and some tinned tomatoes. Added some sugar to the DC's portions and it was fine!

Twostep · 04/08/2013 19:13

I have coconut water, not milk (low cholesterol and all that!).

The 'evil' spice is called 'Shichimi Togarashi'. Shant be getting that again!

Shichimi togarashi is Japanese chilli flakes- it's the red stuff that coats the edge of some sushi rolls etc.

Never heard of making a whole curry from it!

add potatoes.
they soak up the heat.

I know because I have a lovely curry that we like quite hot, it is a meat and potato curry and I taste test it when it is nearly ready (sits and simmers for 1-2 hours so meat is lovely) then add the part cooked potatoes for the last ten minutes and EVERY time it soaks up the heat and goes too mild, and EVERY time I try and make it hotter and it doesn't work!

We managed to eat it (lots of yoghurt!). I bought it loose in a spice shop - it looked pretty and I thought the orange and seaweed in it was intreging!

That's the last time I say 'ooooo, interesting - that looks pretty...'.

Twostep I know you got burnt with this experiment but do think it would be a shame if you never try something just because you don't know what it is... what if you'd never tried chocolate? Grin

Twostep · 06/08/2013 14:43

That would be a tragedy!

I didn't know what the red stuff was and tried it regardless + that's usually how I cook! I'll try anything (veggie) once.
