Am I the only one that dreads doing the internet food order

I just dread it each week. The Ocado order hangs over my day like a black cloud. I live rurally and have two kids and really can't face the supermarket for a big shop in the holidays.

I've finished it. Overspent as usual. Can't cut out all the ice lollies can I, have no shop in the village.

Any secrets other than eating the same food each week.

You might find that other supermarkets are cheaper than Ocado!

nkf · 25/07/2013 18:17

Does it have to be Ocado? Why can't you take things out and not buy them?

Chestnutx3 · 25/07/2013 18:20

I'm not complaining about Ocado but about the act of internet food shopping not the cost. Just replace it with Sainsbury's in the statement. Sometimes I do Sainsbury's but many more substitutions and crucial missing items. I prefer the meat in Ocado and term time buy fruit and veg in the local sainsburys (no aldi or lidl for about 40 miles)

Okay. Well, I do a shop a week and find it really easy. What's to dread? Sometimes, I get one of the children to do it and then I check it over.

Twirlyhot · 25/07/2013 18:37

I find it easier.

I know you said any supermarket but I've used Ocado a few times recently and every time they've sent me a voucher code for money off because it wasn't cheaper than Tesco on comparable stuff as they promise. The site is also an arse to use and the packers seem to hate fresh herbs.

SkiSchoolRun · 25/07/2013 18:41

I hate doing it too. In the same way I hate packing for holiday. I leave it so long I run out then have to go to the shop which I also dislike Grin

No reason why really!

BikeRunSki · 25/07/2013 18:45

I agree with Chestnut and Skischoolrun. Hate grocery shopping, either on line or IRL, also holiday packing. I also live ruraly with 2 young dc.

Twirlyhot · 25/07/2013 18:46

I do a meal plan for the week. Then I write out what I need to buy underneath, adding on toiletries, cleaning stuff etc.

When I shop I mostly put the item in the search box, because it's quicker than going through three menus. Then cross off the list when it's in the basket. That makes the shop itself really quick. If I don't do that I am tempted to just buy what I did the week before out of laziness and that means you miss the best value options.

madamecake · 25/07/2013 19:03

I do it exactly the same way as twirlyhot, only takes about ten to fifteen minutes, although my meal planning takes a bit longer.
I also keep a note on the kitchen fridge of any staples we've run out of then add that to the list.

I just wish ocado delivered to where we live, the sainsburys and Tesco our shopping comes from are only small stores, so the range of products is quite limited.

Chestnutx3 · 25/07/2013 20:07

of course husband just shouted down we only have two nappies left and realised I forgot the bread (activity for the children to do tomorrow I suppose), too late to adjust my order, this always happens

I do a meal plan, including lunches, snacks and baking, then add in toiletries and cleaning stuff. I also use Ocado and have a smart pass - this is the cheapest way to have a weekly delivery. However, it means every delivery over £40 is free so I have them come twice a week - usually Monday and Friday. It keeps the planning more manageable and means I rarely need to freeze meat and fish before using them.

In terms of running out of stock things (nappies, bread etc) put a magnetic pad on the fridge door and jot down as things are running out. DH can do that too!

Bunbaker · 28/07/2013 08:50

I shop from Tesco and use the "My Favourites" list to make sure I don't forget anything. It takes about 20 minutes. I find it a massive time saver and much more convenient than actually going shopping which takes up at least two hours of my day.

Bullets · 28/07/2013 08:59

I use Tesco too, pay for their 6 month delivery pass and it works out good value.

I do the order Thursday evenings watching Big Bang / How I Met Your Mum on E4, feels like a bit of a treat then!!! Order always arrives Friday evening so we have a nice full fridge for the weekend.

Mostly buy the same stuff each week so go through My Favourites first. Have a strict £50 budget so put everything I'd like to buy in my basket first, then go through item by item deciding which is essential until I get back down to £50.

Since we've switched to Everyday Value range for everything we can except meat, we are getting a lot more snacks and treats food for our money, and any substitutions are for higher priced stuff but we still pay value price, bargain!!!

sashh · 28/07/2013 09:45

I use mysupermarket.com you can compare prices and even split your bill between 2 supermarkets.

Frontdoorstep · 28/07/2013 11:26

I like online shopping, like others I make a meal plan and order what I need. I get shoppingdelivered once a week but I don't do my online order in a oner, as soon as I come across something we are running out of, I click it into my basket, and if the children want something, I click that in too, by the time it's time to check out everything is there.

I use Tesco and use their app on my phone, my phone is always beside me so if I spot something that is running out I click it into my basket there and then.
