A cook book full of simple family recipes urgently needed...

Dh's friend was widowed last year. He confessed he is struggling with thinking of things to cook for himself and his son. He's doing an amazing job of trying to keep life 'normal' for them. Can anyone recommend a really good book of recipes for them to try. It needs to be stuff that doesn't require thousands of odd ingredients specific to that recipe.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

The Baby Led Weaning cookbook. Easy recipes suitable for children and adults of all ages.

Another vote for Jamie's Ministry of Food - it really is a brilliant everyday cook book. I use it all the time.My 7 year old DS has managed to follow the recipes and has cooked a pie and a couple of stews from scratch.

Nosh for Busy Mums and Dads. Bought a couple of months ago and is great. Even does a weekly meal plan with shopping list!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 24/07/2013 19:28

How about this?

This is good too

I like Fay Ripleys books - full of everyday but interesting food that you really want to cook from...rather than wistfully read!

Brilliant! Thanks all, lots of suggestions.
I'm going to google Jamie's ministry. OldLady - that book looks great, have you tried it?
Nosh for busy mum and dad sounds good too, he works full time so time is an issue.
Not sure he has time or inclination to go through good food magazine but I love it!

This covers lots of basic techniques and has a variery of relatively simple recipes; no complex or expensive ingredients needed.

I'll third Jamie's Ministry of Food. I bought it for DD a couple of years ago, she hates cooking, but has managed several successful recipes from this book.

Aggies Family Cookbook is £3.99 in the Works. Lots of great recipes and tips on meal planning and keeping household appliances clean too Smile

stressedHEmum · 26/07/2013 09:30

This is brilliant. it has months of meal plans, recipes for batch cooking, recipes for leftovers, store cupboard recipes, budget recipe....

it would be the only cookbook your friend would need.

Xiaoxiong · 26/07/2013 10:07

If he has an iPhone, the how to cook everything app is brilliant. It's a full size cookbook but easily searchable and doesn't make you buy extra packs of recipes all the time (Jamie, I'm looking at you...)

magimedi · 26/07/2013 10:11

Delia's basic cookery course - in nearly every second hand & charity bookshop. Foolproof.

Ministry of Food for me too, it's what I sent my daughter to Uni with.
