You know those onions they bring with the poppadoms at an Indian restaurant?

How can I make them at home? I have tried just chopping onions but they don't taste the same. What do they have on them? Salt? I am craving them... Help!

Thanks, TeamEdward. I could do that and it would be delicious but round here they are just onions. Well, clearly not, otherwise I wouldn't be asking this question, but they look like just onions. Especially yummy onions...

have you tried chopping onions and mixing with chopped flat leaf parsley?

Beehatch · 05/07/2013 15:03

It's the subtle bouquet of cockroach feet Grin

SecondRow · 05/07/2013 15:04

Could it be some kind of vinegar? Or is it sweet-ish?

FadBook · 05/07/2013 15:07

Ours are the same as TeamEdward - cucumber and tomato, finely chopped with coriander. I also put a little mango chutney in mine with some oil and mix it in

I remember seeing a tv show years ago which showed a way of cooking onions Indian restaurant style. They used a big heavy based saucepan, loads of ghee and dropped in sliced onion, swirled them around to cover the onion in the ghee and left them to cook on a low heat for hours. I've tried a couple of times to replicate this but always end up burning the fuckers. Angry

Got this recipe from the back of a packet of nigella (black onion seeds): Finely chop an onion, mix with a tsp of black onion seeds, sprinkle with salt and a tiny dash of chilli powder, and pour on some lemon juice. Leave in the fridge for at least half an hour to let the flavours combine.
It's delish!

Souper · 05/07/2013 15:11

It could be sugar. Or vinegar. Or salt. I have no idea. And obviously a completely crap palate.

Salt and lemon juice might be it!

It's mint sauce!

MotherOfNations · 05/07/2013 15:17

goodasgold is right. Mint sauce usually mixed with tomato ketchup.

Souper · 05/07/2013 17:02

Mint sauce you say?!

WandaDoff · 05/07/2013 17:04

Mint sauce & tomato puree.

ProfYaffle · 05/07/2013 17:06

I know where you're coming from Souper. The onions in our Indian are crisp but not hot, I normally won't eat raw onion but I do there. It doesn't taste of anything else though, I can't taste salt, lemon or mint and there's definitely no ketchup. I've always wondered how they do it.

LowLevelWhinging · 05/07/2013 17:06

Tomato ketchup. Seriously! The guy in our local take away told us!

Also nice with mango chutney instead.

Onesleeptillwembley · 05/07/2013 17:09

ketchup and mint. They are lovely with nango chutnet on Poppadoms. Funnily enough I only know ine pkace here in Bradford that donthem, but they are common most other places.

HuevosRancheros · 05/07/2013 17:18

I think if you soak the onions you will get that milder flavour, that you are prepared to eat raw

RockySpeed · 05/07/2013 17:25

Ketchup! I asked too! At saffron desi in Bradford. Although I've yet to make them taste the same, I suspect you have to leave the onions in for ages or maybe soak them first??

I'm hungry now!

HondaJizz · 05/07/2013 17:27

It's just ketchup!

HolidayArmadillo · 05/07/2013 17:31

But they aren't red Confused

ProfYaffle · 05/07/2013 17:34

yes, the ones at our Indian aren't red either. I kind of suspected they must be soaked but don't know what in Confused

AmbrosiaCreamedMice · 05/07/2013 17:35

I don't know why I shouted that.
