Spinach

If you are cooking a single portion of fresh spinach just for you because no one else in your family will touch it how do you do it? I want pan-size/type, cooking time and any enhancements, specifically.

I put some in a colander and pour a kettle-ful of boiling water over it. And maybe grate a little nutmeg over it.

Oh really greeny? (love your username btw). Is that enough to wilt it, will try. Thank you.

Yep, enough to wilt it. I had a had of boiling my spinach to hell and back by getting distracted and forgetting it. This prevents that.

Just don't squeeze the water out the second after or you'll burn your hands. I have never done that, oh no...

TempusFuckit · 03/07/2013 21:36

Rinse and shake so there's water on it, but not much.

Hot wok - add butter till it foams, then spinach and stir until it wilts. Then loads of nutmeg, bit of salt, squeeze of lemon.

You can ring the changes by using olive oil instead of butter and adding cumin, or adding toasted pine nuts and sultanas too.

I'm the only one who likes spinach in this house do I eat it raw or use frozen spinach which is great in risotto.

UptoapointLordCopper · 03/07/2013 21:48

I stir fry it with some chicken and sichuan spicy bean paste. Or just with sichuan spicy bean paste. Yum, If you have time chop some garlic and chilli and ginger to stir fry with. That makes it so nice that I usually cook two portion so I can eat it the next day too.

SizzleSazz · 03/07/2013 21:50

I just stir it through cooked food such as a casserole or sit cooked food such as chicken/fish on top which wilts it. never cook it on its own

JamNan · 03/07/2013 21:53

Wash it then pour boiling water over it. Drain add butter and nutmeg.

I think spinach belongs to the same camp as peas - best frozen.

Tesco (my only close comparitor is Co-op, who sell a chopped mush in lieu of actual spinach) sell a good frozen leaf spinach that you can add blocks of to stews, curries, soups, etc, or defrost/cook at speed because you forgot to take out of the freezer and it easily equals fresh in flavour and colour. Love spinach - frozen is the way ahead - and this from a fresh-food zealot.

Frozen spinach here too. Wok it with pine nuts and lemon juice. Delicious.

Yonihadtoask · 04/07/2013 20:36

I just wash and put in a dish and cover with clingfilm. Microwave until it gets warm - stop before it gets limp.

Salt and pepper.

apatchylass · 04/07/2013 20:40

I chop up some chilli and garlic, fry it in a bit of oil in a large pan and then throw a whole bag of baby spinach into it. Love spinach.

I use frozen spinach - just had some tonight, in fact! just pop it in a bowl in the microwave, cover. Delicious
