Cookery book club - July - Hugh F-W Veg and curries by Madhur Jaffrey and the Hairy Bikers (vroom vroom)

Come join the Mumsnet cookery bookclub! Each month we choose two cookery books - one popular, like Nigella / Jamie / Delia, so you probably already have it / can borrow it and one a bit more unusual. We cook a minimum of two recipes each - you choose the recipe, they just have to be ones you have never cooked before- which works out at four new recipes each month. Then we chat about them!

For June our books were:

  • Mexican Food Made Easy by Thomasina Miers
  • Thirty Minute Meals by Jamie Oliver
And we posted here

For July our books are:

  • Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall Veg Every Day
  • Madhur Jaffrey Ultimate Curry Bible AND / OR madhur Jaffrey's Curry Easy AND / OR Hairy Bikers' Great Curries

For August, our books will be:

  • Fuchsia Dunlop Every Grain of Rice (chopsticks at the ready ladies)
  • Dan Lepard Short and Sweet

We will always try to pick at least one book with recipes available on the Internet, and local libraries are great for cookbooks if you can order in advance. We pick books three months ahead so will be choosing September's books this month.

And some more here

Apologies if these are duplicates, not actually got time to browse atm! :)

snoworneahva · 11/07/2013 16:14

No a sign of Tonia Buxton in the library network either - think we're going to be limited to the select few who want to buy it and it's pricy on amazon.

SilverSixpence · 11/07/2013 16:51

Please can we do Tessa Kiros I have Apples for Jam and Falling Cloudberries both are fab and would like to cook more from them

HuevosRancheros · 11/07/2013 17:00

OK, I know this is no help in choosing September's books, but at some point could we do a tapas-y one? Have no idea if there is a recommended one, but would love to add a few (veggie) tapas dishes to my somewhat lacking repertoire of patatas bravas and tortilla! Grin

madamecake · 11/07/2013 17:16

Please can I join? Am starting to get back into cooking following dc2's arrival, and have been lurking on the previous threads!
Made the Vietnamese pork and lemongrass curry from HB last night, was very good but think I would use less chilli in the paste if I made it again, it overpowered all the other delicate flavours (or maybe my chilli was just very hot).

Curioustiger · 11/07/2013 17:19

Madamecake welcome! I like the look of that Vietnamese one. Following science's rave review I have just ordered the ingredients for the Rajasthani curry and then also lamb dopiaza. Basically I want to stock the freezer for my return to work so thought the latter would be a good bet for that.

Has Claudia Roden done a Spanish book?

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 11/07/2013 18:04

Sorry I know she has. My mum has it.Blush

Ignore me!

snoworneahva · 11/07/2013 18:07

Moro might be good for tapas. Would like River Cafe - I have yellow and have never really cooked from it, green too!

snoworneahva · 11/07/2013 18:08

Claudia Roden is someone whose recipes I'd be keen to try.

HuevosRancheros · 11/07/2013 18:48

Thanks snow, have now added two Moro books onto my library order list Grin

Never heard of them before either!

Love this thread :)

ELR · 11/07/2013 19:07

Hi everyone, been so busy and so far only cooked one dish from mj last week! Will look through my books tonight and meal plan for next week. I couldn't resist and ordered hb from the book people it arrived today and it looks good.
What about that Claudia Roden arabesque? I like the idea of a Sainsburys or good food mag too. I always buy Sainsburys magazine I love it! And only £1.60 too.
tiger I have been 5:2 ing since February I have lost 13lbs it's a slow process and sometimes really hard but it's the best diet I have been on as I really do eat well on 5 days that I don't fast. I am now 10st and everything in a size 12 fits and some stuff is even a little big. I had been 10st10 for the last 10 years really so really pleased.

ELR · 11/07/2013 19:15

Having just read the thread!! Note to self read before you post! I have heard cloudberries is good and I love watching the barefoot contessa, a lot if the smitten kitchen online recipes were tweaked ina garten recipes.

Curioustiger · 11/07/2013 19:17

Elr thanks for that. That's really inspirational. I would be really happy with slow and steady progress, I just want to put a stop to creeping weight gain and hopefully shift a bit of my mum tum at the same time!

Agree with everyone that Claudia Roden sounds good. Does she pass the library test?

Claudia Roden Food of Spain may be a good book for some Tapas inspiration?

Pantah630 · 11/07/2013 19:28

Food of Spain and Arabesque both available in Dorset Libraries, as are Ina Garten :)

maniacbug · 11/07/2013 19:45

Blimey, you lot have been busy chatting!
Just came on to say: hurray for Falling Cloudberries. I have had it for about 5 years and only ever cooked ONE recipe from it, but it's a beautiful book and I would love to use it more. Arabesque is one of my favourites too; it contains DH's 'signature' dish, which he used to make so often I almost got tagine fatigue. Almost. But happy with anything for book 2 as am so delighted you've chosen Cloudberries!

HuevosRancheros · 11/07/2013 20:01

Claudia Roden's Spain added to my library 'hold' list.
I now have 8 books on order, will need a very large rucksack to bring them all home! Blush

HuevosRancheros · 11/07/2013 20:04

ELR just had to say that's really good to hear about 5:2 :)
I have been pondering it for a while, think it might be practical in September when DS starts preschool so I won't be eating with him, and will hopefully have more time to meal plan, generally be more organised :)

mimolette · 11/07/2013 20:07

I vote for Moro, and need a push to actually cook from it. Their food - judging from the restaurant - is gorgeous but the recipes require a bit of shopping and/or time so may be nice for a challenge.
Just made the HFW potato salad to go with BBQ. Not tried yet but looks good and should make a nice change from the traditional mayo version. Does anyone else find the detail in the instructions annoying though? I don't need a whole para on how to boil an egg, followed by another on how to boil potatoes! (Or am I missing something?)

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 11/07/2013 20:41

I'll have to check my mum will lend me her Claudia Roden or I will be racing Pantah to the library copy. Wink

pregnantpause · 11/07/2013 20:57

This thread is so expensive! I love the look of moro, and arabesque, as well as a few hundred others nowGrin

I made t the hfw potato, egg and tomato salad for lunch, it was delicious and easy, but I nearly lost my head and followed his instructions to boil an egg- I caught myself in time and thought better of itWink

pregnantpause · 11/07/2013 21:01

For a future month if anyone else has it, may I suggest under the walnut tree? It's scandanavian, I can't remember who by, but I have it and it's lovely.

snoworneahva · 12/07/2013 06:56

Claudia passes the library test but she has written quite a few books on different areas. The one that draws my interest is her book on Jewish food, the veg and fish one could be good too as we haven't had a fish focus yet. Or is Rick Stein or someone else better for that?
