We are planning a birthday party and there is a little boy coming who is severely egg allergic. I want to make sure that at least the buffet is egg free- can anyone give me an idiot's guide?! I am thinking:

Ham and cheese sandwiches
cocktail sausages
crisps
breadsticks/crackers
houmous
tomatoes/cucumber sticks etc
biscuits- do I need to get special biscuits?
sausage rolls or cheese and onion rolls?? (or is pastry an issue?)
chocolate rice crispie cakes

Does any of that sound like it might be an issue? Obviously I will check the packaging too...

For the party bag a little pack of haribo and fun size chocolate bar. The cake won't be egg-free but as it is going in the party bags I figure he can have a crispie cake instead and will be none the wiser!

You can actually get eggless cakes, especially if you live in certain parts of the country. Where I live (London) there is a large Hindu community, some of whom do not eat eggs (or any meat) for religious reasons and there is a chain of shops here called Only Eggless! But your crispie cake sounds a fair compromise and I wouldn't worry about this.

One thing I would suggest is make sure there is enough food for veggies (who would often be used to eating eggs as a source of protein). So make sure the ham and cheese are in different sandwiches not together (preferably on separate plates). Also sausage and cheese and onion rolls look similar and are easily confused.

Biscuits and pastries might be an issue (e.g. egg wash glaze)- double check ingredients. Also double check the ham and sausages if they are processed, could contain egg as a binding ingredient.

Mini pizzas would be a nice addition (maybe instead of the sausage and cheese and onion rolls)

Check the ingredients of absolutely everything as sausages and biscuits often have egg in them and sausage rolls and pastry things are often brushed with egg.

I used to take crisps for my ds as a treat whilst the other children were tucking into birthday cake.

Thanks! I have left out the sausage rolls, the sainsburys cocktail sausages and ham appear to be egg free and I have got party rings and pink wafer biscuits, which I read online are egg free. I'll keep all the packaging for the mum to check when she arrives just in case...

As the mum of a DC with an egg allergy I feel I should point out that even a number of chocolate bars have egg in. My DC got an award at school in Friday that was a Milky Way which he can't have and then was at a party yesterday, where the mum had gone to great efforts to cater for him but just hadn't considered that leaving the egg sandwiches touching the cheese and ham sandwiches was an issue and that the wagon wheel in the party bag also contained egg. But you wouldn't, would you?

He to was made rice crispie cakes in place of the cake Grin

So yes, checking and keeping all packaging is the way forward and make sure egg containing foods are kept well away from the non-egg foods and that hands are washed and utensils changed after handling the eggy food.

You sound as lovely and considerate as my DC's friends mums Smile
