Calling parents of vegetarian children!!

SoupDragon · 03/02/2004 18:54

I'm planning on doing individual boxes of food for DSs party. One of the children is a vegetarian. Obviously, this is not a problem but I was wondering what to put in.

It's easy to leave the ham sandwich out and put an extra cheese spread one in but what would be a good replacement for cocktail sausages & chicken nuggets? Brands/where to buy essential as I've always struggled to find nice veggie alternatives in Tescos for BIL/SIL when they come over.

I thought I'd ask for opinions from the experts

Tivali brand is good,
could get some little veggie vol au vents
Cauldron is another good brand

a piece of bacon, we all know veggies can't resist it (I know this from experience, was veggie smelled bacon now confirmed carnivore)

SoupDragon · 03/02/2004 18:59

I can't possibly put some bacon in his party box!! Mind you, I do have some veggie "bacon" rashers in the freezer...

Sorry, couldn''t resist it
Ithink that veggie bacon would go down really well, it's a boy's party isn't it?

littlerach · 03/02/2004 19:19

Second Cauldron sausages - yummy!!

bluebear · 03/02/2004 19:40

tesco do a frozen veggie nugget as well and a third vote for cauldron sausages - preferably lincolnshire mmmmmmmm
Oh, and falafels might be an option.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2004 21:37

Thanks I'm not sure my Tescos stocks the Cauldron sausages (where would I find them?). I'm sure they used to stock lincolnshire sausages but I haven't seen them recently.

I'm not sure I can bring myself to do the veggie bacon in case the child's mother thinks I've gone mad and am trying to corrupt her son.

cauldron sausages usually in chilled cabinet with other veggie stuff (mainly Quorn stuff with bright orange packaging) in our tesco... the cauldron packaging has changed recently and is now a sludgy green. We can get them in tescos, sainsburys and waitrose round here.
Hoummous is good in sandwich/rolls too..
veggie bacon gives me indigestion and is probably pretty high in salt (but so's real bacon I guess).

Hulababy · 04/02/2004 08:51

Holland and Barrett stock quite a few bits of veggie food too.

suzywong - as a non meat eater I actually really hate bacon! Don't even like the smell. Never did as a meat eating child either! I know I am odd

Hi soupdragon. I'd go with veggie sausages too. Almost every supermarket I've been to stocks Linda McCartney vegetarian sausages in the frozen section with the other veggie stuff. Or You could put some pieces of cheese and tomato pizza in. Or garlic bread?

udar · 04/02/2004 09:55

I think Quorn do some nuggets too - I haven't seen them at the supermarket but a little corner store around the corner has them.

Janstar · 04/02/2004 10:14

DD1 is vegetarian and I was for 20 years (I eat fish now). Quorn is lovely and very good for you, you can buy it in nuggets, sausages and many other disguises. In my local supermarkets it is often in both the chilled cabinet and the freezer. It's sold in Asda, Sainsbury's and health food shops, to my knowledge, and probably other major outlets too.

Linda McCartney's makes some delicious pies and other things but I don't like their sausages much.

Tivall nuggets are good too, but a bit harder to find.

SoupDragon · 04/02/2004 10:14

Sainsburys only had the Cauldron dijon mustard susges which I thoubht were probably inappropriate for a 5 yo!

It's nice to have suggestions from veggies, rather than me trying to guess.

Tesco do their own brand of Lincolnshire sausages in the freezer bit - v. nice, almost as good as Caul;dron, and cheaper too!!

sykes · 04/02/2004 10:21

Waitrose has a reasonably good veggie section - think it's their own brand sausages - my girls (and me) like them. There are also some good (and healthy vegetarian nuggets around - I'll check the label tonight. The alternative bacon (in my opinion) isn't great. Pizza usually goes down well.

sykes · 04/02/2004 10:37

Sorry - think it was Cauldron (sausages). I'll check tonight but recommend looking in Waitrose anyway.
