Slow roast pork for a dinner party main?

After four years of no real entertaining (we had 3 kids in 3 years and not a lot of sleep!), as a gentle re-introduction to a social life I've got six here for dinner on Friday. One friend is pregnant and another has been travelling lots for work this week so I thought I would do something comforting and easy and not too dinner-party-ish.

Unfortunately we don't have a barbecue!

I was wondering about doing a slow roast shoulder of pork, with some new potatoes (or potato salad?) and mixed green beans. What do you think, does it sound nice? Or better with rolls? Is apple sauce needed, or baked apples maybe?

I found
this John Torode one
And
this Jamie one
Has anyone tried them / got a better one?

I wasn't going to do a starter, maybe just some nibbles and then pudding is creme caramel and/or eton mess.

Please let me know any thoughts, I am severely out of practice at entertaining friends so any pointers very welcome :)

Sounds yummy.

If you peel, core and halve some apples and sit the shoulder on top whilst it you roast, you'll have instant apple sauce slow cooked in pork juice. Just scoop the apples out at the end and "mush" if needed.

Another tip. Cut the skin off the shoulder, score and salt the skin and replace round the shoulder. When the meat is cooked take the skin and put in a frying pan skin side down and crisp it up. Instant crackling Smile

Can you tell I'm a lazy pork fan

Mmm! I'll bring the wine shall I?

Can I suggest that pork belly is even better for a slow roast, as all the fat melts out leaving the meat meltingly soft and succulent.

I shall steal your ideas fishybits Grin. My mouth is watering.

I'm hard pressed to choose between shoulder and belly but if pushed I'd go for shoulder for an English style roast and belly for a Asian style one.

Thanks for the tips - and encouragement! I think I will go ahead with the shoulder. Fingers crossed!
