The only thing I can think of is to put it in a sieve and run cold water through it like you can do with frozen prawns, but it might turn into mush.

I always end up microwaving mine, I agree it's not ideal, but as long as its cooked properly afterwards I don't worry too much that some bits get cooked and some stay raw while I'm defrosting, and so far I haven't given my family food poisoning!

Thank you. I have put it in airtight LocknSeal containers and am using boiling water. The box is watertight, so far so good!

Not ideal, but I have cooked mince from frozen before (more than once), I've put it on hob in pot frozen and it cooked fine, just need to keep turning it as bits start to defrost.

I cook (beef) mince from frozen all the time, thought that was fine no?

alienbanana · 02/06/2013 20:04

Cook it from frozen. If you put it in a pan with a lid on it'll defrost fairly quickly.

In future put the mince in ziplock bags and flatten - it'll defrost very quickly if its flat.

alienbanana · 02/06/2013 20:05

Sorry, obviously put in the bags to freeze :)

Oblomov · 02/06/2013 20:06

Cook mince from frozen all the time. Buy the bags if frozen mince. Thus was surprised op was even asking this question.

What is it about the microwave that you don't like? We can only advise you on alternatives if we know that the alternatives won't do whatever it is that you dislike.

YY just cook from frozen. Just keep turning the bit that touches the bottom of the pan to prevent it from burning.

heritagewarrior · 02/06/2013 20:14

I put mine in a bath of warm water (in a plastic bag). Takes about 30-45 mins to defrost. I have a nagging feeling you're not supposed to do this, but I have done it for many years now, and haven't poisoned DH or latterly DSs yet....!

Trills my microwave defrosts very unevenly. Cooks one part and other bits frozen. Worked well in the lockn' seal box with boiling water. Will get ziplocs. Thank you

My mum used to defrost mince in the saucepan as she was cooking it - always seemed wrong to me, so v glad to see others are doing it without mishap
