Cheese on fruit cake???

Today I was chatting with colleagues, cakes came up in conversation - and one of my colleagues started talking about having cheese on his Christmas cake.

I thought he meant as a dessert option at first, but he actually meant having cheese on top of the fruit cake instead of having marzipan and icing.

This all sounded very unusual to me. Does anyone else actually do this? And does it really taste okay? Colleague swears it is delicious, but I'm skeptical.

We have a fruity tea loaf with cheese on, something like a Wensleydale

My Yorkshire relatives do this, with crumbly cheeses. It's great. Smile

My Dad likes strong cheddar with fruit cake.

Coming from Yorkshire I wouldn't even contemplate
Christmas cake without crumbly cheese

Oh yes, but it must be Wensleydale, though Cheshire might just do at a pinch.

Dh is from Lincoln and does this...I find it very odd!

meditrina · 01/06/2013 20:52

Yes, a Yorkshire habit. And I'd go for Wensleydale.

BikeRunSki · 01/06/2013 20:53

Of course! in both my Yorkshire and West Indian heritages.

boatclub · 01/06/2013 20:56

Yes a nice bit of Wensleydale, Gromit! But I'd have the marzipan and icing as well

ShadowStorm · 01/06/2013 22:42

Hmm. Maybe I should try this the next time we get fruitcake in?

You can't beat wenseydale on fruit cake.

Shropshire blue is also quite nice sliced thinly and eaten on top of a slice of Christmas cake...
