Help! Impressive pud to take to friends' dinner party...

... I only just remembered we're meant to be bringing pudding, which means going out tomorrow morning to get ingredients and making it during DS' nap [panic]

Any fail safe, idiot proof stunners?

I also think you shouldn't serve up a dairy heavy pud when the main is basically cheese. You want something fruity after that.

I can't see what was wrong with the comments along those lines

Ragwort · 26/04/2013 09:06

Does anyone read the whole thread? Hmm

Main course is fondue yet 80% of the replies are suggesting cheesecake/trifle/creamy desserts ...... the few who tentatively point out that this is completely OTT are ignored.

I would suggest a simple dish of raspberries/strawberries and blueberries. Possibly a few shortbread biscuits for those who want it.

Chubfuddler · 26/04/2013 09:10

I agree you either want pavlova or a tart of some kind. I suggested tarte tartin because it is incredibly easy and tastes amazing. People always think I have gone to massive effort when I make it.

Wineandchoccy · 26/04/2013 09:14

Cheats banoffee pie, mix 1 packet of crushed ginger nuts and 100g of melted butter, press into base and sides of cake tin and chill for 1/2 hour.
Spread carnation caramel (available in most supermarkets) straight from the tin, cover with sliced bananas and whipped cream, sprinkle 1/2 a flake on top.

Apricot + raspberry tart

Shop bought file pastry - let it come to room temp
Pre heat oven 200/gas mark 6 and put a baking tray in to warm
Brush each layer of pastry with melted butter you want a rectangle of pastry about A4 size so fold over if you need to make smaller.
Roll edges over slightly to make a border, brush middle with apricot jam
Slide onto baking tray and bake for 5 mins
Cover with apricots and a little melted butter bake for 10 mins, then scatter raspberries and caster sugar cook for 5/10 mins until pastry is golden brown.

Serve with cream, creme Fraiche

You can do this with any fruits, blueberries + strawberries is yum. Look in the reduced fruit bit as it works best with squishy fruit

Mintyy · 26/04/2013 09:16

I suggested tarte tatin too. If someone tried to serve me a pudding full of cream after cheese fondue I would smile politely and decline.

JamNan · 26/04/2013 09:32

Rhubarb crumble and a bought posh sorbet.

GirlOutNumbered · 26/04/2013 11:24

While I agree with you ragwort on not having cheesecake etc.
I would be gutted if pudding was just fruit! It's my favourite part of the meal.

YoniOno · 26/04/2013 12:15

Woah. Thanks all for ideas, apologies if I'm not cooking the one you suggested - no need to get affronted. Lots of tasty sounding dishes I might try in the future.

There will be 3 desserts brought in total by guests, so anyone who doesn't fancy tiramisu will have a choice. I hear the thing about dairy / cheese - but hey ho. I'm trying the BBC one, will update as to how it turns out!

Thanks

Dont be daft, nobody is affronted that you are not cooking dishes that you suggest, but your blatant rudeness to people suggesting your choice is cheesy and rich. Bear in mind people have taken their time to contribute to your thread, and there is no reason to be rude to them! Note especially your sarcastic post to lucjam downthread.

LittleBearPad · 26/04/2013 13:36

The OP asked for suggestions. She didn't ask for critiques of her choices

QuintessentialOHara · 26/04/2013 13:40

She got suggestions, not critiques, and none of them were rude.

LittleBearPad · 26/04/2013 14:09

Guess we read things differently

YoniOno · 26/04/2013 17:08

Update: the components I tasted were all yummy. It's this one - apparently to be authentic it should have egg in it, but that looked much harder so stuck to this.

What do you want me to say Quint? Confused if you're seeking buns to throw, you're on the wrong thread - this one's full of cheese.

The poster I was curt to didn't actually post anything useful, if you care to recap...

I don't think Quint is looking for a bun fight. She's just trying to point out how rude you were to lucjam.

And lucjam did post something helpful, you just chose to ignore it, which is your prerogative. Doesn't mean you should be rude though.

Wishiwasanheiress · 26/04/2013 17:25

Frozen summer fruit with melted white chocolate. Get fruit from frozen aisle in most supermarkets. Use half decent white choc. I like green & blacks personally but most work!

Just take frozen fruit out of the freezer about hour before, melt white choc over a ban Marie (over a pan of water). Pour melted white choc over softly frosty fruit. Eat. Bang easy!

That's from j sheekey fish restaurant London. Charged a small fortune for it but knocks people over every time. My fail safe desert!

LittleBearPad · 26/04/2013 17:25

Lucjam may have thought she was being helpful but her comment was pretty rude in the first place

ExcuseTypos · 26/04/2013 17:29

If the main is a fondue no one will thank you for a heavy dessert. I promise you, you want something to cleanse the palate such a fruit or a lemon sorbet maybe with a light shortbread biscuit? Fondue is HEAVY, lovelt but heavy. Peppermint tea after is also nice.

lucjam Thu 25-Apr-13 21:46:20
tiramisu is yet more cheese!!! honestly after fondue its the last thing you want!

In what way are these posts rude?Confused

LittleBearPad · 26/04/2013 17:46

They aren't helpful and they're fairly aggressive.

QuintessentialOHara · 26/04/2013 18:00

I think the only person who has turned aggressive on this thread is the op herself, for absolutely no reason at all!

" Thanks for that helpful post lucjam Hmm I'm glad you posted."

" Woah. Thanks all for ideas, apologies if I'm not cooking the one you suggested - no need to get affronted. "

And finally:

"What do you want me to say Quint? if you're seeking buns to throw, you're on the wrong thread "

I have not thrown buns, I have given you my most favourite recipe.

ExcuseTypos · 26/04/2013 18:03

OP, why not take a cheeseboard too, in case there isn't enough cheese?

Is that the kind of "helpful" remark you're after?

ExcuseTypos · 26/04/2013 18:10

Or how about a cheesecake, that would be lovely with after a fondue.

QuintessentialOHara · 26/04/2013 18:13
Smile

Chocolate fondue with marshmallows, pineapple chunks and cheese-cubes.

HeadFairy · 26/04/2013 18:39

Oooh marking my place, I've got to do pud for 12 on Sunday and I need inspiration!

HeadFairy · 26/04/2013 19:27

Blimey, now I've gone through this thread... some lovely ideas on here..

We're having lasagne, so what does everyone suggest for pud? I like the pavlova for sheer ease
