Gordon Ramsey's in Chelsea or the Fat Duck at Bray, which would you go for? Has anyone been to either (or both)?

thanks

GR. Think I would hate the FD really.

Blu · 12/05/2006 18:35

GR. Except for the surroundings. (have eaten at neither, though)

skerriesmum · 12/05/2006 18:38

Isn't the Fat Duck the one where the chef does "interesting" things with texture and flavour... like bacon and egg ice cream? Truly avant-garde. If you're into that, it will be unforgettable, then go for it! If you just want a really nice meal, then I guess Ramsey (not that I know anything about him!)

oxocube · 12/05/2006 19:03

Just want a fabulous, unforgettable dinner really! Yes FD does seem more weird with odd flavour combinations but still has rave reviews as does GR. Does he still actually cook there now?

Have eaten twice at GR and lovd it both times.... really worth it.
I likeGR because it's a small restaurant so it's more intimate.
Not been (yet) to FD. Friends did and liked it.... they also went to GR (with us) not sure which they prefered.

notasheep · 12/05/2006 19:19

Sorry to be awkward but i would choose Manoir Quat SaisonsGrin

blueteddy · 12/05/2006 19:20

Gorden Ramsey's.

pupuce · 12/05/2006 19:22

Does FD do a lunch menu ? Not according to their website....

satine · 12/05/2006 19:23

Oooh, snail porridge? Leather foam? Bacon ice cream? Cor, no thanks and I consider myself to be quite adventurous! I'd choose Gordon every time.

oxocube · 12/05/2006 19:37

I know what you mean, Satine. I love food and would honestly say there are very few foods I don't like or wouldn't try but GR seems, well, more tasty somehow.

My only complaint about GR is that the big menu (degustation) is quite rich... you won't be hungry after that!!!!

oxocube · 12/05/2006 19:41

Actually, a foody friend did a week's residential cookery course at 'Le Manoir' and said it was absolutely fabulous and completely changed her perception of food and cookery! Heavy stuff!!

What did you eat Pupuce? Was it worth it - the hype and the money!

pupuce · 12/05/2006 19:46

I went for the a la carte the 1st time and the degustation the 2nd.
I would go a la carte next time as

  1. I have done the prestige menu already
  2. It was just too much

Everything was delicious.
There was no problem with us buying "cheaper" bottles of wine... my view being he would not serve plonk .... so I didn't feeel any pressure in buying £100 wine... I bought MUCH cheaper bottles.

Sorry price wise... DH who has eaten in many very very good restaurants in UK and France says this is best value for money by a long shot!

Prices have gone up between my 2 visits too (but that's normal as they were 2 years apart).

oxocube · 12/05/2006 19:49

I am becoming more convinced by the moment. Will mail my 'dinner partner' (actually my brother!!) with all your comments!

pupuce · 12/05/2006 19:55

I don't think you can go wrong wih GR.
Of course like any posh and expensive restaurant the service is a bit OTT but after a couple of glasses of wine you don't notice Grin

CountessDracula · 12/05/2006 20:00

ooh I disagree I think the service at GR is absolutely perfect! Not too interfering, very relaxed.

I would go GR too defo

pupuce · 12/05/2006 20:01

I did say it was intimate but for about 12 tables there are 12 waiters !
Am i complaining ? no... would I go back ? definitely Smile
