Breakfast ideas for 11.5 month old with sudden aversion to cereal please!

Hello,

Since being introduced to solids at 6 months my DS has always loved breakfast - but not any more! He's always had cereal (Weetabix or Ready Brek, or Baby Organix when younger), grated fruit, some plain yoghurt, either mixed together or separately. Recently I've introduced buttered toast every other day as an alternative, but he's now decided he's bored of everything. He won't eat fruit any more, whether grated, chopped, disguised, whatever, and has begun to have tantrums when presented with a bowl of cereal of any kind. He's been given his own spoon to help feed himself, and that hasn't helped, and I don't want to give him eggs too often as I don't want to bung him up, and am beginning to dread breakfast time!

Any ideas for alternative breakfasts (that don't involve large amounts of cooking, I spend quite a large part of my days cooking lunch and tea for him and don't want to add cooked breakfast to the list!) would be much appreciated! Grin

Toasted muffins or bagels ?

charliegirl25 · 10/05/2006 14:47

my 11.5 dd is doing the same. I was wondering if it was due to her drinking too much milk first. But she is getting funny with finger foods too. Ripping it all into bits and throwing it all over the floor.

Tinker · 10/05/2006 14:48

Oh, how we laugh at food being ripped to bits and thrown on the floor in disgust.

lahdeedah · 10/05/2006 15:08

My 13mo DD won't touch cereal so I give her toast and marmite, and a yoghurt or a banana.

Maybe yr DS is teething - my DD always loses interest in food when she's got a tooth coming through. lasts a week or two, then she gets her appetite back. I just offer her more milk and the few things she will eat. Everything is a phase at this age - try not to get stressed about it, he'll eat if he is hungry.

charliegirl25 · 10/05/2006 15:23

is the same happening in your house tinker?

Tinker · 10/05/2006 15:28

Exactly charliegirl. Eats for the childminder, not for me so not sure it's more teeth but could be. I never spot these things anyway.

Some breakfasts I give are;
marmite on toast
cheese on toast
scrambled eggs
fruit yoghurt
home made banana/apple muffins

shellybelly · 10/05/2006 15:56

jahan can you give us your muffin recipes please Grin

Banana Muffins
I use cups and spoons as can't be bothered with weighing etc

In a bowl put

1.5 cups flour
2tsp baking powder
1/2tsp salt

Make a well and add
3 mashed bananas
1 egg
1/3 cup veg oil

Stir and beat with a wooden spoon.
The recipe calls for 3/4 cup of sugar but I usually put mixture in 4 muffin cases for ds and then add 1/2 cup sugar, mix well and do the rest of the muffins. (you can mark them with a raisin on top or something so you know which is which)

Apple muffins

In a small bowl mix
2 apples grated
1 tblsp sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon

In a large bowl put
1.5 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

then add
3/4 cup veg oil
1 large egg
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

mix etc

And add the apple mixture.
This recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar. Do with it as you will.
Mix and bake etc.

I normally cook on 180 for 20mins using a fan assited oven

Eggy bread (or French Toast) has always been a big favourite here.

PMSL at this thread. Must be an age thing!! My DS2 seems to be 'bored' with food too! and has always refused cereal. We do, marmite toast, fruit, yogurt or nowt!!! Grin

AllieM · 12/05/2006 10:18

Wow - good to know I'm in good company on this one! Looks as if it could well be an age thing, and also poss. teething. He also does the rip-up-finger-food-and-chuck-about thing as well, what joy it is to scrape dried scraps off the floor, highchair, my feet, etc.

Muffins and bagels and crumpets v.g. ideas, as is eggy toast - will try them all. Might stop him going hungry!

Thanks girls!

xx Smile
