My 2 year old daughter has been eating either cheerios or rice krispies for ever and is starting to look like one... Can anyone suggest an alternative cereal that doesn't have loads of salt and suger added (she doesn't like weetabix or shreddies

Special K with red berries? Probably has too much sugar but it's not as bad as the chocolate ones! My ds likes cornflakes too he's 3.

Honey Kashi is gorgeous and has just become much cheaper and more readily available because it has been bought by, erm, I think Kellogs. Anyway my kids love it.

I also get Mesa Sunrise and then something slightly sweeter like Jordans crunchy oats to mix with it.

Shredded Wheat is another option. You can put a handful of raisons in to make it sweeter.

porrige

sparklemagic · 09/05/2006 22:54

another vote for porridge though (call the MN police) we add a drizzle of golden syrup.

Where's my dentist's number????

schneebly · 09/05/2006 22:58

We do porridge with a mashed ripe banana in - sweet enough I think. Smile

apronstrings · 09/05/2006 23:00

I'm a real hypocrtite Blush Make the children have it plain and sneak golden syrup onto mine in the pantryGrin....well its for their own good.

moondog · 09/05/2006 23:01

Muesli and yoghurt and fruit
Mix your own
Porridge is tops though

fairyfly · 09/05/2006 23:01

Kashi, from the health food shop, it's basically pure showered sugar puffs.

emkana · 09/05/2006 23:06

Special K has loads of salt in it.

I have it, but won't allow the girls to have it. Blush

brimfull · 09/05/2006 23:56

I can't bear porridge without sugar, don't see the harm in a teaspoon of sugar in it tbh.

pegasus · 10/05/2006 09:39

cornflakes? I don't know about the salt/sugar contents

BettySpaghetti · 10/05/2006 09:42

Porridge is a favourite here (I add dates and walnuts to mine) and also Ready Brek.

lazycow · 10/05/2006 09:54

Never have understood the porrige thing - absolutely disgusting texture unless it is redeemed with honey or golden syrup and cream. Also I find myself ravenous at mid-morning after eating it - despite all the hype about it's good GI index etc.

Ds likes it though with just some pureed fruit - oh the hypocrisy of it Blush

I know the Peter Rabbit brand had been slagged off mercilessly and is pretty expensive but thy do do a sugar free/salt free cornflakes - Ds hates them though.

Other than that not sure - most cereals seem a pretty s**t way to start the day to me really though I admit they are easy to make. Shredded wheat is pretty good though (100% whole wheat and nothing else) - again ds won't touch it with or without added fruit.

I give ds combinations of French toast, bits of cheese, ham, toast with avocado or banana spread on, fresh fruit, omelettes or scrambled eggs. He does eat porrige and weetabix about 2-3 times a week as well.

apronstrings · 10/05/2006 11:56

lazycow -you don't sound like a lazy cow , can I come for breakfast at your place - beats a slice of toast any day!

supakids · 10/05/2006 12:01

Why not try a croissant with a glass of milk just for a change.

supakids · 10/05/2006 12:03

my little piggy has two croissants!

lazycow · 10/05/2006 13:05

ah yes tjhe croissants I did forget those. Ds's eyes light up when I give him those (quite rare though as too many in the house and I eat them).

Honestly though - cutting up cheese/fruit/ham etc is really no problem and and omelettes/eggy bread are quite quick. Scrambled eggs I microwave so are mega quick. Honestly I am lazy -can't have my reputation suffering Grin

NotQuiteCockney · 10/05/2006 13:07

Our current popular cereals are:

  • corn flakes (some random organic brand)
  • rice crispies (ditto)
  • weetabix
  • whole earlth muesli
  • home-made muesli

Some forms of cheerios have been popular before, but the "normal" ones are by nestle, so not possible. And the "fake" ones are all way too sugary, they taste really sweet.

Nonee · 12/05/2006 11:06

Thanks for all your suggestions. I'd never even thought of adding stuff to porridge to make it taste better or museli. But I think I'll give my DS the porridge and I'll have the croissant......
