We are not vegetarian, but I have really gone off sausages and we are trying to have less meat in our diet.
Was gonna try Linda McCartney vege sausages, but worried that they taste like mush?
Any opinions?
Thks

I havent found any shop bought before sausages I like, Tbh. I have also gone off sausages, and a few weeks ago I made some which turned out really well, did a batch for dinner, another for freezer and some leftover for packed lunches.

I used either roasted sweet potato or butternut squash as the main ingredient, rhen lots of other veggies cut small/cooked and mashed. Added herbs and spices. Shaped, then rolled in oats, baked in oven until firm but not hard/burnt.

I don't much like the Linda McCartney ones - trying too hard to be meaty. I prefer some of the more honestly vegetarian ones, like Wicken Fen ones (I particularly like their mushroom and tarragon ones ) but you can only get them at health food stores etc. Cauldron Foods ones are OK too.

But if you are actually meat eaters, then you might like the more imitation-meat style ones like Linda McCartney and Quorn. Try a few and see. The only 'meaty' ones I like are occasional vegetarian frankfurters, from Tivall, or Tesco own-brand (frozen).

Linda McCartneys are too oily for me, but I suppose meat sausages are oily too.

I prefer Redwood's, much nicer.

My best are homemade seitan sausages but vital wheat gluten can sometimes be a bit elusive/expensive to find.

We love the LM sausages, you are best to try them and see. Family like them because they taste meaty and less oily than normal sausages and in a fry they play the role perfectly. There is no other alternative for us as they are the only vegan ones in the stores as all the others contain egg white but if you can tolerate egg white then you have a much better choice. I think they are like marmite either you love them or hate them :)

I don't like fake 'meat' products but Asda's own brand glamorgan sausages are gorgeous. I buy them for meat-free DH and eat them all myself. He likes the Cauldron ones from the chiller section too, and the Linda Mccartney frozen ones. The LM ones are often in Iceland at 5 for a £1, the are about 6 for £1.80ish in usual supermarkets.

HazeltheMcWitch · 22/03/2013 01:39

Agree that the LM ones are very oily.
I like Quorn bangers. I like them most in a sandwich.

Fake meat ones are over-processed and horrid. Best of a bad bunch - tescos sausages - in the fresh foods area. Or Cauldron. But they are all incredibly salty and over seasoned with nasty dried herbs. Was veggie for 20 years and I never found a commercial sausage worth eating for pleasure - they were simply a necessary convenience. As cecyhall says the best ones are homemade seitan sausages. Best meat sausages -(which IMO are also mostly over seasoned and can taste as hideous as veggie versions) - premium 93% pork at M&S.

Have bought my own mincer this week and I plan to start making my own sausages very soon!

DH & I like Cauldron sausages but the children complain they taste too peppery.

greenandcabbagelooking · 22/03/2013 07:37

I also like Glamorgan sausages :)

agnesf · 22/03/2013 07:44

Not sausages but Linda McCartney Mozzarella Burgers are great for people who want a fake meat burger.

LM sausages and sausage rolls also a hit with us.

NotGoodNotBad · 22/03/2013 07:51

Cauldron here too. Linda McCartney are for people who like fake meat.

Quorn ones are ok, a bit dry but you can have lots of ketchup. Smile

MrsVJDay · 22/03/2013 10:42

Another vote for Asda Glamorgan sausages here - my non-veggie xh and dss used to ask for them in preference to meaty ones if I was having some!

plantsitter · 22/03/2013 10:45

Don't like LM ones, but the Quorn Premium wild garlic sausages are nice. Not cheap though and you only get 4 in a pack.

PointeShoes · 22/03/2013 10:59

Linda McCartney are my favourite, Quorn one are ok if you have a sauce with them. I like the sausage mix ( used to be called SOS mix , from morrisons) not sure of the name now, but you just add water , mix it and shape it.

Meat eaters here - but bought some veggie sausages for when DD1s vegetarian friend visits -Tescos Lincolnshire type.
She didn't like them so I tried them and I actually think they taste more meaty than the mid-range meat ones we normally get. (DD1 won't eat 'good' quality sausages -too chewy). Now DD2 and I have the vegetarian ones and DD1 the meat ones..doesn't like the vegetarian ones because they are too meatyHmm...
DP won't eat sausages at all (they are full of rubbish etc etc)
Asda do similar Lincolnshire ones - not as juicy - we prefer the Tescos ones...
BTW tried the Glamorgan ones (when they didn't have any of the usual ones) -and they are ok - but wouldn't call them sausages - basically mash and cheese breadcrumbed ...I don't think they can be served as bangers and mash - mash and mash? But that might just be me...

fishcalledwonder · 22/03/2013 11:40

My sister is veggie and will only eat the Cauldron sausages.
