Does anyone use Quorn mince?

I've seen it advertised and it's supposed to have less fat than mince. What's it like in a spag bol for example? Does it taste 'meaty'? Will my dc know the difference?

We're not veggie but thought I might try some.

I keep trying it because it's usually cheaper and obviously less fattening than meat, but no matter how I cook it it just doesn't taste like meat. It doesn't have that chewy-ness, it just sort of disintegrates in your mouth. And it didn't fool my DP. It's not bad by any means, it's just not "meaty" enough IMO.

I've used it for years and i'm one of the select few it seems who loves Quorn! I use it wherever I would normally use mince, so spag bol, chilli, cottage pie etc. I've not eaten real meat mince for years, but whenever my mum makes it for my dad he never has a clue. Halfway through he'll say, is this a meat one or quorn one? I reckon make one for the kids, but keep schtum - they'll never clock on.

I find I can use 50% beef and 50% quorn in a spaghetti bolognese and the kids don't notice. They notice immediately in shepherds pie though and refuse to eat it.

The texture just isn't the same as beef but worth hiding in bolognese.

It's horrible and tastes about as much like meat as gravel would.

A meat-free veggie based pasta sauce would be preferable for me.

ATouchOfStuffing · 13/03/2013 13:42

It is cheaper! I used a bag from the freezer last night actually! It has a bit of a spongy texture and absorbs flavours so may need more seasoning, but I actually like it. Just don't expect it to taste/feel like mince and you won't be disappointed :)

My ex boyfriend's parents were farmers who thought vegetarians were the devil. ExMil once cooked quorn mince shepherd's pie for ex-fil and he didn't notice the difference!

I can't say it's got the same texture exactly but it absorbs flavours well, is easy to cook and low in fat.

RooneyMara · 13/03/2013 13:48

I love it actually, no problem with the texture and you don't have to worry about what's in it or gritty bits like you get in meat.

It tastes fine if you season it properly. I fry it in olive oil with some salt and use it with tomato sauce in spaghetti bol. and so on - or topped with potato in the oven. Stock is good for that.

I only buy it on offer as it seems dear to me but yes probably is cheaper than mince.

PrincessOfChina · 13/03/2013 13:49

We never eat real mince, only ever Quorn. I sometimes add a beef stick cube to get a more meaty taste.

JoandMax · 13/03/2013 13:54

I use it purely for the fact it's so much lower in fat and calories than beef mince. I make chilli, spag Bol etc.

I quite like it but it doesn't taste like mince and isn't as nice - needs a lot more flavouring and it is a big soft. But much healthier

Kikithecat · 13/03/2013 14:01

My family all love it in lasagne.

MrsMaryCooper · 13/03/2013 14:06

I like it, but it doesn't really taste like mince.

3rdnparty · 13/03/2013 14:11

we eat it but only when covered in lots of sauce....and also the chicken type bits which are not bad in fajitas when covered in avocado/salsa/sourcream and lots of herbs....mainly cos its healthier...the raving carnivores in this house know its not the same but as long as its not too often it'll do...I would rather that than buy cheap chicken as have seen to many programmes on factory farming...
