15 month old won't drink milk - advice needed

My 15 month old dd hasn't drunk any milk for about 4 months (formula, cows's). She eats really well, full-rounded diet and has cow's milk with breccy, a small yoghurt or two a day and maybe
some custard with pud. Is this enough ? I don't get on too well with my HV's so am loathe to ask them. Any advice ? She's growing well but I guess it's more complicated that ....

I wouldn't panic too much. As long as you know she's getting all the nutrients she needs from other stuff, and it sounds like she's getting a good range of dairy stuff too, then don't worry. At this age (my ds is 16 mths) I think it's recommended to have about 500ml a day - I pour half of that on ds' cereal anyway, so the rest is probably accounted for in yoghurts etc.

If you're worried about vitamins then Abidec liquid mulitvitamins (orange packaging) are in most supermarkets and chemists. You just dropper them on the back of the tongue. They're recommended if you don't think your baby's drinking enough milk. I started giving them to ds 3/4 months ago just to reassure me more than anything and he now asks for his "yummy mins" at breakfast!

bobsmum, did you see the thing about Abidec on another thread - ie it contains peanut oil?

katierocket · 21/01/2004 13:25

emmalou - my ds is 2 and 2 months and he hasn't drunk milk since about the same age as your DD is now. He too has it on cereal but he just doesn't like drinking it (which I can understand becuase I think it's yuck!)
If she's eating well, i wouldn't worry)

I wouldn't worry too much. dd was a poor milk drinker from about 8 months until 20 months then suddenly last summer she couldn't get enough. She still has about 300 - 500 ml to drink per day plus yoghurt and milk "in disguise" (scrambled egg, cheese spread, cottage cheese etc)

fairydust · 21/01/2004 16:34

my dd stoped drinking milk at 12months old just wouldn't touch the stuff - i use to give her yogs/ cheese etc for her calcium intake.

Then one day over xmas her cousin had a bottle of milk and she started wanting one since then she's on nearly 3pints a days (22months now by the way)

So i wouldn't worry to much

As far as I know Abidec contains refined peanut oil which according to their leaflet hasn't been known to cause a reaction, but I'll definitely check again.

Have you tried offering milk where you have added
nesquick chocolate powder as a treat? Might work...

Epigirl · 21/01/2004 23:07

Emmalou, 25 mth old dd hasn't touched milk as a drink since she was 12 months. She also eats milk on her cereal and youghurts, cheese etc.

My HV was alarmed but I've never worried about it as her calcium intake seems fine and she's happy and growing well. Hope this helps.

Hi Emmalou, my D went on strike as far as milk was concerned too. I bought her 'drinky' yoghurts, and each day added a little more milk to them in her cup. Another thing that worked well (not sure how ethical! But, I'd rather she drank milk ) was any time I made myself a cuppa, I'd make her a cup of 'tea'. We started by literally giving a tea bag from my cup a quick dunk in her cup of milk, so it seemed that we were making tea for her, but now we don't even need to do that much, and she loves having a cup of 'tea' (milk!) when mummy does .

Levanna · 21/01/2004 23:40

Oh, and she's usually happiest to drink it at breakfast time, when she's most thirsty.

3 of mine out of 4 did not have milk as a drink age 12-15 months. They had milk in cereal and puddings, cheeses etc. They are all perfectly healthy. I really do not think that milk as a drink is necessary. Don't worry.
