the last spreadable icing i made was from a kids book on cupcakes..iirc it had butter, double cream, loads of melted chocolate and icing sugar in it. about a gazillion calories..but no corn syrup (which sounds yuk)

Hi - corn syrup is american for Golden Syrup. If you want a spreadable butter icing I would do double amount icing sugar to butter or marg, and possibly a splash (tbspn) or so of milk. If you have any cream knocking about a dollop of cream does make it extra luxurious. Can flavour the icing with cocoa, coffee (use Camp coffee or dilute in a little boiling water) or perhaps orange juice. Drop of vanilla essence is nice too. HTH

\link{http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_syrup\Sounds like liquid glucose}. You could probably dissolve some sugar in warm water instead.
