It is a warm summer day. My twin girls are turning one. I have invited friends and family to lunch to celebrate. There are white clothed tables under the trees, a little craft activity for the children, pink champagne, bunting...

... but what do we eat??

Do I cook it, or do I get someone else to so I can enjoy the day?

22 adults and 20 children.

What would you cook? What cake would you do?

What would you do to make it special?

Are you absolutely positive it will be warm? It does sound a bit magazine-y, rather than reality tbh.

But this is probably what I'd do -

Big cheese board with lots of bread, celery, grapes, crackers etc
A couple of big quiches or tarts (made the day before)
Bowl of green salad
Bowl of coleslaw
Bowl of potato salad
Cold meats and/or smoked salmon
Meringues with cream and berries
Trifle (one raspberry and one either chocolate or pear)
Icecream in cones for the children
Big bought birthday cake
Pimms
Ginger beer

Bring and share picnic? That way everyone gets at least one thing they like. 22 adults is a lot to keep happy with food and with 20 children too that's a lot of catering ehen you should be enjoying your twins' party. If you don't want to ask guests to bring food do you have any lovely friends or relatives that could help out. And definitely make sure you have a Plan B for wet weather.

And I would make either one enormous birthday cake for everyone or a cupcake mountain.

I would task DH to do a BBQ and make marinades etc myself and make a fairy princess castle for a cake

I would do eton mess in glasses for the adults instead of meringues, but instead of that I thinkremus has it spot on.

Alternatively you could do an afternoon tea?

Little daintysandwiches
Scones
Tea
Little cakes
Could add to this mini quiches

If there is the budget to do so then i would be inclined to get a catering in.

Cupcake tower or huge plate of scones with berries and clotted cream = great ideas.
