Buttermilk

Having finally figured out my Ma's soda bread recipe I need access to buttermilk.

Sainsburys do it but only in 300ml cartons and I need about 450, so I'm left with 150mls.

Can anyone suggest where I can buy the buttermilk in larger amounts or suggest a use for 150mls or so of buttermilk?

Make american pancakes or some scones?

You can also make buttermilk yourself by adding lemon juice to milk

I use runny yogurt instead of buttermilk.

If you think you'll use buttermilk again I'd get the powdered form. It lasts for ever and there's no waste. Or use the lemon juice.milk or yoghurt.

I havent seen bigger containers of buttermilk. There are plenty of sponge cake recipes that contain around 100ml of buttermilk. Scones? (BBC good food website excellent) You can use substitutes however there is a certain taste it brings - malty - which subs are ok but you dont get that extra taste.

Powdered buttermilk never seen/heard of it. Do you know a trade name?

Why don't you just drink it? Or is this not done in the UK?

Where do you get powdered buttermilk? That could change my life!
Nigella makes the most amazing chicken goujonny nugget things by marinating the chicken overnight in buttermilk, shaking it off, rolling in crushed up ritz crackers then frying. They are seriously delicious.

ladies...;) Why don't you do that buttermilk at home. Just simply add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to 200 or 250ml of milk and thats it.

really?? Gosh, mumsnet is so full of useful things to know. Do you have to let it sit for a bit or do you just mix and go?
