mum2sam I don't know what the recommendation is but my dss had it when they were around a year old and we had no problems, some people I think advise against nuts until the age of three though.

Coolmama · 01/05/2006 17:23

The advice re nuts until the age of three is twofold, - if there is a history of allergy and second because they are small and hard, are considered a choking hazard. I was told peanut butter would be fine after 1 yr .

Twiglett · 01/05/2006 17:31

supposedly it is wrong to introduce peanuts before the age of 3 as there are a disproportionately high number of people allergic / seriously allergic to them and the earlier they are introduced the higher chance of a dangerous reaction

the advice is to wait till after 3

must admit I still haven't given any to DS who's now 5 .. because its just not crucial to our diet tbh

desperatehousewife · 01/05/2006 18:12

i would choose smooth rather than crunchy i think.

FrannyandZooey · 01/05/2006 18:33

After meeting people with allergic children, I decided to wait until 3 as well. Is it easy to leave out of your child's diet and anything you can do to avoid developing a peanut allergy has got to be worth it - it can be so detrimental to the quality of your life.

geogteach · 01/05/2006 18:37

My 18 month old has it . In fact it is one of the few 'food' words he can say, he considers it vital to his diet and considering he is lactose intolerent and vegetarian it is a valuble source of protein.

Seona1973 · 01/05/2006 20:10

in a family with no family history of allergic disease e.g. asthma, eczema, hay fever and food allergies, peanut butter is considered ok from 6 months. Just give a small amount to begin with and check for a reaction.

If you do have a family history it is advised to wait until 3 years before giving peanuts/nut products.

My dd didnt have it as young as 6 months but was certainly eating it by around 1 year old. She loves her peanut butter and jam sandwiches!

jellyjelly · 01/05/2006 22:32

If there will be an allergy it wont be until the child has it twice as the first time should never do anything, its the next time to watch out for.

my son is allergic to nuts and eggs.

mum2sam · 01/05/2006 22:35

Ive heard about not giving it to them til they were 3 etc but then i read somewhere about a healthy diet for a toddler and peanut butter sandwiches was in some of the suggestions. Ds starts nursey 2moro so im trying to think of pack lunch ideas so thought he might enjoy peanut butter sandwhiches but wasnt sure whether he could have it.I do suffer from hayfever but i developed that later in life but theres no other allergies. Perhaps il just give him boring cheese or can he have egg mayonaise is that allowed??? At home he normally has a hot dinner or if its cold it tends to be cheese or chicken sandwiches trying to think of a healthy alternaltive hmmmm.....

Twiglett · 02/05/2006 11:05

there is no way on earth you should give peanut butter to a 6 month old . .that sounds plain dangerous to me Shock

geogteach · 02/05/2006 13:05

Egg mayo is fine, DS loves it. I think you have to be careful about giving peanut butter at nursery though in case someone else is allergic, many schools have no nut policy for packed lunches because of this.
