I am sure i saw it on Richard and Judy like 20 years ago and thought yum....

was it that you boil it for hours and end up with a creamy toffee stuff?
I have excited my kids with mere mention - can any one enlighten me!Smile

condensed milk

put unopened can in boiling water and boil for 3 - 4 hours

be careful when opening

makes banoffee style toffee

fuzzywuzzy · 01/05/2006 11:23

yes you boil it to make fudge I think, I remember making it as a child and burning it...still tasted nice in a singed sort of way.

NotAnOtter · 01/05/2006 11:25

I think i may have bought evapourated ...it says carnation on the tin - 3-4 hours sounds ages Twiglett!!!!!
I will probably end up with some hideous morphed version of the original!

NotAnOtter · 01/05/2006 11:31

2 hours can do it .. but some people say 3

be very careful when opening the can .. it spits out and its like lava

do a biscuit base .. slice some bananas .. pour condensed milk over and put in fridge .. then cream on top .. ooo yum Grin (haven't done this for about 20 years)

Coolmama · 01/05/2006 17:35

for a little added extra - crumble some pepermint Aero chocolate over the top - Grin

SaintGeorge · 01/05/2006 17:36

You can make some nice Baileys type drink with carnation . Yummmmmmy.

WigWamBam · 01/05/2006 17:39

It has to be condensed, and it also has to be full fat ... which I think was probably what I did wrong last time I tried, I ended up with brown sloshy stuff that tasted nice but that I couldn't make banoffee pie with.

Squarer · 01/05/2006 17:41

STOP! STOP!! I can't take this any more!!!

SaintGeorge · 01/05/2006 17:41

If you need a use for that tin of carnation NAO \link{http://www.nestle.com.au/carnation\try here}

Gingerbear · 01/05/2006 17:42

I tried this once and let the pan boil dry.
sticky explosion all over kitchen ceiling
Not recommended.

NotAnOtter · 01/05/2006 17:52

No Baileys recipe though. I must try to find that for you, it is to die for.

MrsBadger · 01/05/2006 20:05

best use of evaporated milk is \link{http://people.bath.ac.uk/ee1jb/recipes.htm\jelly mousse}. (Raspberry jelly with a tin of raspberries in is the favourite chez Badger.)

NotAnOtter · 01/05/2006 20:08

i am going to try that - have you done the pineapple one Mrs B?

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 01/05/2006 20:37

no - pineapple not favoured round here. Mandarin orange version goes down well though. Or even no fruit at all and just whatever flavour jelly's in the cupboard.

Actually that recipe isn't the one I use but can't find the right one online - I use the juice from the fruit, break up the jelly into it, top up to 1/2 pint with boiling water (none of this 'heat on the stove' nonsense), leave till cool but not set, then whisk into the whipped evap and pour over fruit in bowl.
It's the kind of pudding my mum used to make for me in the 70s...

NotAnOtter · 01/05/2006 20:49

yeah it does - One of my fondest memories was my nan serving up orange jelly with mandarins in it ( in a bowl on a stalk!) with carnation poured over!
She used to make this DELIGHTFUL home made ice cream called 'Chillo' to die for ! Ahhhhh the 70's!

if you buy carnation condensded milk, there is a fab recipe on the back for banofee pie.

Instead of boiling it in the tin ( which takes forever & wasn't that nice, think I used the low fat one) you cook it for 5 mins in the pan, with some butter & sugar.

I make it & then have to freeze it in portions, otherwise I am tempted to scoff the lot Grin

thanks for the tip mojo - you learn so much on mn!
