What can I do with 10 miserably bitter clementines...

I bought some clementines - in Lidl actually. They are bloody horrible. Really bitter and hard to peel to boot.

I don't think they are fit for toddler consumption. I went to Tescos and bought some nice ones instead.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do with the nasty ones, other than bin them? I hate to waste them :(

I'd boil them in a sugar syrup, cool and serve with cream or pancakes

PacificDogwood · 18/02/2013 22:25

Oh yes, I am in the same boat. And mine were from the local fruit shop which is usually v good.
Near impossible to peel and then 'salty' according to DS3 4.10 Grin - I think he means 'sour' or maybe 'bitter'.

I feel your pain, but have no inspired ideas. I was about to fling mine out today... Here's hoping somebody will be along with genius ideas.

Marmalade?

Or, ooh, Nigella's chocolate orange cake, only with clementines.

Have seen this but not tried it...

I was going to suggest: Throw them at number 10.

I call it : "Recipe for Disaster".

I made clemencello from mine - a bit like limoncello, delicious straight from the freezer.

Google clemencello recipe, it's a 'Delicious' magazine recipe

HazeltheMcWitch · 19/02/2013 18:44

Pinky - oddly, I saw that recipe yesterday. Have you made it? Was it nice? How did you serve it - neat or mixed?

sashh · 20/02/2013 08:14

peel them (easier if you Blanche them) and bottle in sugar syrup.

StripeyBear · 20/02/2013 15:40

Clementine cake in the oven. Fingers x-ed

Still have some over, so might try the sugar syrup next :)

clemencello - delicious! Served it neat with ice, makes a lovely after-dinner drink. Would be nice with soda water too it you wanted to dilute it. But honestly it doesn't taste that strong! (despite being almost neat vodka)

Well, we've just eaten lovely tangerine clementine cake which was v tasty inspite of having been baked without baking powder Blush and having its top burn to pure carbon BlushBlush. Cut the black layer off, turned cake upsidedown - et voila Grin!
I did not find it a quick cake to make, simple yes, but not fast what with all the boiling 'clementines' and I seperated and whisked the eggs. But yummy, highly recommended, thanks for the suggestion!
