Sarnie fillings that are not processed meat.

Realised that what I think is salami in the fridge may not be just pork and I cant bring myself to eat it. We get through a packet of processed sarnie meat a week and I am going to ditch this habit. But what are instant and affordable alternatives?

cheese (but thats not good every day!)
tuna (quite expensive)
marmite (only I like that)
meat from roasts (we have a roast each sunday so can have that meat for the first couple of days in the week, but it means one less main meal out of it)
cream cheese and ???

and then I get stuck!

hummus is nice apart from the soggy factor if its for packed lunches.
Peanut butter is ok(ish) for none school days - I normally hate it but crave it at the moment?!!!
eggs - yuk in sandwiches, they smell!!

We arent normally fussy eaters, but I'm sure others will find these good ideas so thank you Grin

leftover roast chicken.

Smoked salmon- I buy it reduced and keep it in the freezer.

Tinned mackerel with mayo and horseradish ( cheaper than tuna!)

falafel in pitta bread

cream cheese and spring onion

CelticPromise · 14/02/2013 13:51

You could do a pot of hummus and pitta strips to avoid the soggy bread problem?

toughdecisions · 14/02/2013 13:58

cheddar and curry coleslaw
cream cheese, crunchy lettuce or watercress and cucumber
fish paste still exists

get a slightly bigger joint for sunday roast then you don't lose out on the second meal and overall it will still be cheaper than buying ready sliced meat

OldBeanbagz · 14/02/2013 14:00

Houmous with either chopped pepper, grated carrot or a few rocket leaves.

Cheese & jam (big favourite with my DD)

Smoked salmon & cream cheese

Tesco's raost mushroom pate

Quorn fake ham.

colditz · 14/02/2013 14:00

Hard boiled egg, sliced, not mashed, with salad and black pepper.

Hoummous with finely chopped red pepper or grated carrot.

Cream cheese and smoked salmon with cucumber

TryDrawing · 14/02/2013 14:02

Cheese and beetroot is my very favourite sandwich filling. Yum :)

HeadFairy · 14/02/2013 14:02

Could you buy your own naice ham and cook it yourself?

fieldfare · 14/02/2013 14:05

Cheese and beet root with salad cream for me.

I cook a gammon and then slice it for sandwiches. Dd likes really strong pickle in hers.

ouryve · 14/02/2013 14:15

Boiled egg, peanut butter, houmous. Buy a piece of british ham with the money you'd spend on cooked meat for a few weeks and boil it, slice it and freeze portions, so you can take out what you need. Or spend the money you would spend on cooked meat on a bigger roast. Make your own pate - that freezes well, too.

WowOoo · 14/02/2013 14:24

Do you eat fish?
We had smoked mackerel pate. Bought loads, mixed and blitzed with mayo and lemon and pepper.
Prawns?

Your leftover roasts: Buy a slightly larger roast. ?
And, have slightly smaller amount of meat in your leftover meals. No-one will notice. (That was the plan, but this greedy family did notice actually!)

I'm taking some of these ideas.
I also now feel the need to buy an egg slicer after colditz's suggestion. Yum.

CelticPromise · 14/02/2013 14:53

Gammon and piccalilli

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2013 15:37

buying a bigger joint is a good idea (just hard to bring myself to do it when even brisket costs so much) I think maybe sharpening my knife might be a good idea, to get thinner slices!

I do like the idea of buying naice ham and freezing it in slices. Is there a really good way to freeze it so it doesnt dry out?

We do like fish, I need to be aware of dds friends going 'ewwww' at the smell!

I like the idea of using hummus as a dip - I used to when dd was at primary school and I used to make an effort Grin

lots of other good ideas. I just need to stop being so lazy and think ahead a bit more!

I didnt know pate could freeze ok, I'll have to look up some recipes.

Thank you :)

If you scramble the eggs instead of boiling them they don't smell so much.

NormanTheForeman · 14/02/2013 15:41

You can also buy sliced chicken/beef from the supermarket, or buy chicken breasts, cook them and slice them.

PickledInAPearTree · 14/02/2013 15:42

It's loads cheaper to buy a gammon joint and cook it and you can be sure it's what it is.

Mozzarella tomato and basil is one of my favourites.

Or have a change & little salads like couscous with bits of dates. & feta

Smoked salmon & cream cheese

Mmm.

PickledInAPearTree · 14/02/2013 15:43

Jam & Philadelphia is a surprising delicious sarnie for kids.

AlohaMama · 14/02/2013 15:48

If you like hummus you can make similar easy pates from tinned beans, butter bean, garlic and lemon etc, kidney bean with tiny bit of curry powder etc.

NormanTheForeman · 14/02/2013 15:51

You can also buy things like tuna pate, crab pate, mackerel pate etc in a lot of supermarkets if you like those sort of things.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2013 15:54

I like those sort of things norman Grin
lots of excellent ideas!

DD often takes cream crackers and seperate slices of cheese when she needs packed lunches as she's not a sandwich fan.

foxyhen · 14/02/2013 15:59

Muenster cheese and avocado is my favourite.

BabyRoger · 14/02/2013 16:02

My favourite sandwich (or filled pitta) is:

marinated tofu pieces (e.g. cauldron stuff)
peppers
gherkins
mayo
lettuce
jalapenos

It is v nice.
