Jamie Oliver's steamed coconut buns?

Anyone made them? I had a quick google and reviews are a bit mixed, from amazing to heavy and difficult to handle. Do they taste of much? Another review said they were bland. So I'd like to give them a go and wondered if they were worth trying?

Hiya - I'm afraid I haven't heard of them, but they sound amazing so would love to hear how they turn out! Grin

They are from Jamie's 15 minute meals, steamed buns for eating with a stirfries etc. Only ingredients are 1 tin of 1/2 fat coconut milk, 2 tins of SR flour and pinch of salt, steam for 10 minutes! Now it looks simple and he raves about them so thought I'd give them a go, but did read some reviews they were a bit heavy. I just wondered had anyone on MN tried them :)

We've been wanting to try these Grin
Someone must have had them already, surely??

Made them today Hmm they were difficult to handle, a bit dense and don't taste of very much! They'd remind you of a dumpling texture. Certainly not fluffy as JO would have you believe unless I did something wrong but I followed the recipe exactly so looks like the reviews that said they were heavy were probably right.

I was planning to try these but have heard from two friends that they are bland with a weird texture so have put it on the back burner for now (no pun intended)

I love coconut though so a little part of me is still tempted - yet fighting with the other part that tells me coconut milk is expensive and could be put to use in other dishes where loveliness is guaranteed.

Too late now, but I made them.

Very easy to make, but I found them to be very bland and heavy in texture once they cool down. So best eaten warm I think, and if I ever do them again I'd try and think of something to give them some more flavour.

There awful, don't waste your time, tasteless!!!

Haven't made the JO ones, but when I've had coconut bakes before I've always found them heavy and bland after they've cooled. Love them for as long as they're warm, though.

Just an update on these. We have been making them quite regularly as the kids love them but have tweeked the recipe a little. I now add 1/2 teaspoon of bi carb (even with the SR flour) and a little pepper. The rise better, are lighter but as suggested we eat as soon as they are ready. We always serve them with spicey Thai noodle soup :)

Thanks for the tip re bicarb, my DH loves steamed buns so I will give them a go

I'll think I'll have a go at making these. We usually have a stack of steamed buns in the freezer bought from the Wing Yip. It'd be great to do my own.
