I just got a slow cooker and would love to hear some simple, nutritious recipes that I can bung together in the cooker...

TIA

Hi there, I also recently brought a slow cooker and have also been trying to find some receipes. I went on eBay recently and brought a slow cooker receipe book so will see how that goes. However I have made a lamb stew, was delicious! Basically I chopped corriander garlic and onions up. ADded carrots and swede and the lamb. potatoes also can be added. I added to that some bisto gravey granules a stock cube aswell some ground ginger and a sprinkle of cumin seeds.. Absolutely delicious loved by the whole family. The sauce tends to be runny however if u do not like it like that just add more gravey towards the end. I either cook on high for 2hr 30mins or a 8 hrs straight on low. Good luck and please share any receipes you may have. All the best

Chorizo and lentil soup.

Peel and dice an onion. Peel and chop a chorizo. Fry these two in a pan with some oil until the onion is soft.

Add 2x400g cans chopped tomatoes, 250g red lentils and 600-800ml stock to the slow cooker. I also add 2 tsp sugar.

Once the onions are soft, add them and the chorizo to the slow cooker. Stir and cook on high for 4 hours.

DP blends his before eating but I eat as is.

Stewing beef
flour
carrots
swede
onion
new potatoes
salt and pepper and dried mixed herbs
oxo cube (I'm addicted to oxo)
boiling water

optional Worcester sauce / red wine

switch on the sc
Coat the meat in flour
bung everything except the water in the slow cooker
add enough water to just cover, put on high and come home to a meal.

You can leave out the potatoes and make dumplings in the last 20-30 mins of cooking.

Sausage casserole

Pack of good quality sausages (6 or 8)
2 tins chopped tomatoes
2 tins of beans
A sachet of sausage casserole mix (you can add your own herbs if you prefer)
An onion (you can add other veg too if you fancy)

Pop all in a slowcooker, I chop my sausages to bitesize first

Serve with dumplins and crusty bread and real butter :)

These sound good. I've never had much luck with sc. results are either too bland or concentrated/nearly burnt. DH rolls eyes went I get it down from top of fridge for another attempt!

Do u bother with browning in a pan first? That seems to defeat the purpose of hassle free s cooking, but I've read somewhere once that best to do it to kill off bacteria that wouldn't be killed off with low heat cooking?

mossycat · 07/02/2013 14:59

Oh... And how do you make dumplings? Haven't eaten then since school! They sound nice a stodgy for this weather tho.

valiumredhead · 07/02/2013 15:02

I use Aunt Bessie's frozen dumplings in the SC!

I cook a whole chicken and gammon, really nice!

valiumredhead · 07/02/2013 15:05

No I never brown off first - no point and it makes no difference to the look/taste apart from when using sausages.

rice pudding is lovely done in the SC!

MarasmeAbsolu · 07/02/2013 15:13

whole chicken - how does this turn out?
with skin? do you add liquids?

valiumredhead · 07/02/2013 15:14

Put whole chicken in SC and add TBS water - and leave! Grin

Dumplings

125g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
pinch salt
60g suet
water, to make a dough

Add all the dry ingredients to the bowl gradually add water :) mix and form into bowls. Pop them in sclowcooker 30-40 mins before you serve your food :)

You can buy packets of dumpling mix where you just add water. Taste exactly the same. Not sure if there's a big difference in cost, the dumpling mixes are between 50-80p depending on area/shops :)

Lamb and Aubagine Stew:
Lamb chops
Aubagine
Onion
Tinned Toms

I've also discovered that pulses don't need to be soaked first in a slow cooker so anything with beans os good. I do a chicken and butterbean stew:

Chicken legs or thighs
butterbeans
diced onions
diced carrots
tinned toms

BaconAndAvocado · 08/02/2013 14:37

My one and only SC recipe I use is

Chicken thighs/drumsticks
Tin of chopped toms or jar of pasta sauce, Lloyd Grosman always tasty!
Sliced peppers
Mushrooms
Lots of garlic granules

Whack on at 8, return home at 4ish and serve with rice. Fab!

Might try some of,the recipes on here tho!

I love my slow cooker, it is on its last legs I use it so much!!

This is my fave....

Lamb chops
Passata
Rosemary
Butter beans
Salt and pepper

AMAZING with roasties Smile

Attackofthefiftyfootwoman · 08/02/2013 18:38

Second chicken get some cheap chicken legs and cook with about 4 lemons halved, 6 garlic cloves (dont add water) lovely tender melt in your mouth chicken thats is great with gravy and mash

determinedma · 09/02/2013 20:39

My slow cooker is too fast. No way I could put it on at 8 and come home to anything edible! Brilliant for meals put on lunchtime or afternoon though.
