Strawberries & Grapes for 11mth old

My DS 11mths now doesn't like to be spoon fed (and is not interested in doing it himself) and so I'm turning into a finger food expert, but was wondering about when I can try him on strawberries and what I can watch out for if he has a reaction. Or should I skip Strawberries for a while in fear that he would then not think apple or bannana were so tasty.

Also he loves grapes. I get the seedless white ones and cut them in half and he very happily pops them into his mouth. I don't hear grapes mentioned much as a fruit for babies and was wondering if they have much nutritional value.

I feed my 10 month old grapes, but not strawberries because of allergies in our family. I think grapes are not mentioned because people think they make babies windy.

Grapes have a lot of sugar in them (not the teeth-rotting form, so that's OK) and can give babies who're prone to it diarrhoea - likewise can help babies who're prone to constipation. The peel cotnains roughage, and liek all fresh frruit there's vit C in them.

Whole grapes are a choking risk, too.

dd has had grapes (cut in half or smaller) and strawberries since she was about 8 months. She does love both more than other fruit, but will still eat other fruit. Only problem with strawberries is that you have to hide the punnet or she'll keep asking for more!

elena2 · 16/01/2004 14:35

Yeah, I didn't give grapes to ds1 'til he was about 1.5 as I once saw a older baby choking on one in the park. She was ok after mum turned her upside down and whacked her on the back, and the grape flew out, but it was pretty scary to see.

elena2 · 16/01/2004 14:36

It was a whole one btw, chopped ones are probably a good idea.

Hulababy · 16/01/2004 22:55

I think strawberries are normally held back as they can cause some dodgy allergy reactions.

cas1968 · 18/01/2004 20:10

Hi

dd has had both strawberries and grapes (quartered). I am not buying strawberries at the mo, because they're not really in season. She did taste them at my Mum's at Christmas, though and loved them.

fisil · 18/01/2004 20:18

We gave ds both at 1 months. Grapes he treated as a toy, so we didn't bother wasting good money on them again!

Strawberries he loved. I figured he had had no allergies up to this point and as long as we kept an eye on him after we'd be fine. He had no reaction, but his clothes all came out in a bright red rash!

popsycal · 18/01/2004 20:20

i doubt fisil actually meant 1 month.....##""""

prettycandles · 18/01/2004 21:00

My mum tells me that when I was very little I used to break out in a rash when I had strawberries. I don't remember this at all, and always thought it was an excuse to stop me eating all the strawberries in the garden, but, just to be on the safe side, I didn't give my ds any berries until he was about 2.

cas1968 · 19/01/2004 17:05

prettycandles - my gran used to break out in a rash every year during the strawberry season, regardless of whether or not she actually ate any! She was an August baby and her mother admitted it was her fault for eating too many of the things when she was pregnant.

fisil · 19/01/2004 18:45

ooops, well spotted Popsycal.

Nah, actually I meant 1 month, you mean you didn't have yours weaned by then? He was already cooking haute cuisine at the time and running his own restaurant, so I thought it a little unfair not to let him eat it to.

skerriesmum · 09/03/2004 20:40

Saw the first nice strawberries in the shops so got some for ds, he loved them last summer at 6 months (risky I know but he was totally fine.) Yesterday at teatime gave him two berries and now horrendous diarrhea! Thank God we have a handheld shower attachment to be rinsing him off!

butterflymum · 09/03/2004 20:44

Another grapes fan here. Out of interest, does anyone else keep their grapes in the fridge? We do and they stay fresher plus the boys like them being nice and cold to munch on.

slug · 10/03/2004 09:53

Nah, if we left them in the fridge, the door would be constantly open as she rummaged for them. We leave them within hand grasp for her, otherwise we would spend most of our day fetching and carrying. It's like having a baby gannet in the house

SofiaAmes · 10/03/2004 20:59

peel grapes...???? you've got a lot of time on your hands. We've always fed them whole from an early age. Ds used to spit out the skin, dd just eats it.
