Suggestions for good calcium sources apart from milk and cheese

Caligula · 23/04/2006 21:19

That's it really. DD had eczema, I stopped giving her milk and it miraculously cleared up. Every time I give her milk it comes back again and she doesn't like any of the other calcium enriched ones like soy and rice milks. DS seems to have gone off milk altogether and has hated cheese and yoghurt for ages.

I give them lots of fish and leafy veg. Any other suggestions?

There's actually quite a bit of calcium in bread.

motherinferior · 23/04/2006 21:22

According to the FSA:

Other sources of calcium include fortified breakfast cereal, dried figs, okra, curly kale, rice pudding and baked beans.

So I'd say canned fish with bones (apparently), and beans. Don't know about other pulses. Don't see why not.

BonyM · 23/04/2006 21:22

Oops - posted too soon.

Beans and nuts also have a lot of calcium in them.

vitamin D is very important to help absorb calcium, so make sure they're getting plenty.

I found this online

It’s tough to get enough calcium from natural foods if you eliminate milk from your diet. You'd have to eat 3 servings (180g) of spinach, 20 servings (1600g) of iceberg lettuce, 9 boiled eggs or 5 large servings (550g) of broccoli to get the 300mg of calcium found in one 250ml glass of semi-skimmed milk!

starlover · 23/04/2006 21:24

vitamin d comes from natural sunlight, green leafy veg, tofu and fish with bones

motherinferior · 23/04/2006 21:24

aha, read some more on the same site - chickpeas (yum), nuts and seeds. So lots of hummus. Hummus with pitta bread and a spinach salad, she'll be calciummed up to the nines. Don't forget to get her walking and doing other stuff that'll build up her bone density too (DP's mum had osteoporosis so I worry about this).

starlover · 23/04/2006 21:24

if you're worried though you could always give her a calcium supplement

NotQuiteCockney · 23/04/2006 21:24

I think red salmon, with the bones in, is a really good source. That's what a GP told me, ages ago.

Ok, had a wee websearch, the vegetarian society also recommends tofu, dried figs, chick peas, and baked beans, along with the usual leafy veg. \link{http://www.vegsoc.org/info/calcium.html\cite}\link

This is all great, thanks. Funnily enough, it's not my DD so much that I'm worried about, as she'll eat pulses, nuts, seeds etc. quite happily. It's DS, who will eat broccoli and spinach and fish, but not a lot else of the calcium sources. Bread is a good tip.

I have the same problem with ds.I give him tropicana orange juice with calcium added .There is a bottled water called Willow that has natural ccalium in it.
I get it in waitrose

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/04/2006 21:46

Spidermama is good with this info.

Check out the vegan diet related websites. Most veg and pulses/beans have a good amount of calcium in. Some even allow calcium to be absorbed better than cows milk products.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/04/2006 21:48

here is one to start with though \link{http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/nutrition/calcium.php\vegan society}

FrannyandZooey · 23/04/2006 21:51

Broccoli, tofu, sesame seeds, nuts. Also water in a hard water area!

Caligula - have you tried goats milk? DS gets excema with cows milk, but is fine with goats milk for some reason.

Our dietician said she would normally suggest making your own bread and adding milk powder to it for kids that won't eat much dairy.

Have you tried milk puddings like rice pudding?
