Introducing spicy food

My dd is 16 months old and I am wondering when and how to introduce spicy food?? We use a lot of chilli in our food and so at the moment are making a spicy version for us and a not spicy version for my dd but we would like to try and get her eating something with a bit of oomph but not sure how to go about it.

Dipped a bit of bread in a curry sauce we got from an Indian (deliberately chose the least spicy one on menu) and let her try it. It was like a cartoon where the redness started at her chin working its way up her face - we were waiting for the steam to come out of her ears! Not a happy camper although was fine after a swig of milk.

Really don't want to upset her so any advice you can offer would be gratefully received.

So about 10months ago you introduce it gradually and by 16 months she'll be happily eating just about anything.

But okay, you missed that, not a problem just introduce it now slowly just go with just a little spicy and work up, natural yogurt will reduce the spiciness of anything spicy. So from 6 months we just took our food and added yogurt to DD's to lessen the heat.

Yy to yoghurt -or coconut milk/cream - or maybe try just adding some milder spices first eg cumin, garam masala etc. Or Chorizo or paprika for different flavour.

Fenugreek is your friend gives a spicy flavour without the heat. I use this in chilli and curry from a young age with my dd, she still does not like things too hot but I think that is just her pallet. If I fancy something hot then sour cream or coco out milk as others have suggested. Dd is now 6 and likes maybe the hottest curry to be a balti or tika, she will have the meat from a madras with no sauce but will not eat a chilli with any real heat. It is easy to cook around, I either take a portion out before the heat is added or add cream of some sort. I certainly would ease off a little if there is a physical reaction that would just be very unpleasant for your dd.
