Are smartprice ones really bitter and awful or is there no real difference? At the minute a brand name has them on offer but I am thinking about when the offer ends!

I buy smart price, they seem a bit thinner but you cant tell once they are in a spag bol, they taste the same.

Piffpaffpoff · 19/01/2013 16:01

I never notice anything wrong with them in chilli, spag Bol etc.

vix206 · 19/01/2013 16:03

Cheaper the better I find Grin

PestoFrostissimos · 19/01/2013 16:04

They're fine.

Tomatoes is tomatoes Grin

mrspink27 · 19/01/2013 16:05

I use Sainsbos basics chopped tomatoes - 31p ish... they are fine.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 19/01/2013 16:06

Great, thanks everyone! I suppose its the same for smartprice passata too then!!

I always add a little sugar and I slow cook things so its definately a saving to use the cheaper stuff!

I always go for the cheapest in tinned tomatoes, I only put them in spag bog/chilli/pasta sauce etc & you can't tell the difference once it's cooked :)

Moominsarehippos · 19/01/2013 17:02

Less toms, more juice so it depends on your recipe! I once drained a very expensive (emergency purchase) tin of toms and there was bugger-all left!

multitask · 19/01/2013 17:10

The best tinned tomatoes I ever bought were 4 for £1 in Home Bargains, great flavour and not watery at all, just wish I'd bought more and I can't even remember the make but it was a dark blue tin!

NettoSuperstar · 19/01/2013 17:13

I think they're fine, I always slow cook dishes with them in and add a pinch of sugar per tin

Cheapo tinned toms here too. I only ever use them in sauces anyway.

I did used to like tinned tomatoes on toast, but would use Napolina for that 'dish'. Grin

StuckOnARollercoaster · 19/01/2013 17:19

I haven't proved this scientifically but I thing that the whole tomatoes and chop them yourself are better than the ones that are already chopped. So I tend to buy the cheapest whole plum tomatoes and am happy with them.

Moominsarehippos · 19/01/2013 17:24

I like Ciro ones. They are half price for a four pack at Sainsbos atm, so just under 50p each. They have special offers on these quite a lot, so I bulk buy when the do as we go through loads of them.

multitask · 19/01/2013 17:30

TheSecondComing that's it Ciro and they were lovely, I'll keep an eye out for them again as definitely the best of all the tinned tomatoes I've used :)

CogitoErgoSometimes · 19/01/2013 18:52

Of course there's a difference or they wouldn't be cheaper. They are less ripe, more acidic, not such a good colour and often contain a much lower pulp to water ratio ...

storminabuttercup · 19/01/2013 21:32

I find that cheaper plum tomatoes are better than the chopped ones, I then attack them with the spoon. If I'm making curry I use cheap ones. Ocado plum ones are brilliant

BertieBotts · 19/01/2013 21:34

They taste exactly the same but the sauce is more watery.

I tend to buy the branded or own brand but not cheapest ones, but when they're on offer - excludes the watery issue but isn't as expensive.
