Do you leave a cup of water in your toddler's cot?

My dd has been getting very constipated and in an effort to get more liquid into her I left an Avent Magic cup of water in her cot last night. She had drunk about half of it this morning which I think is a good thing, but I'm not sure about the implications on teeth. Don't think she'd suck it all night as she has a dummy.

Any comments?

I guess you're concerned about the shape of the spout? The only trouble with bottles being given to toddlers overnight was, I think, that in my parents' generation they always put in sugared-water -- some variation on squash! I doubt water would be a problem.

I used to do this with all of mine, CD. As it's only water her teeth will be fine - mine have lovely teeth (overcrowded but lovely!).

CD, I think a cup of water should be fine. But reading the title of the thread, I thought you meant a plastic cup (not a sippy cup) of water! My initial reaction was that it was a bad idea....

Well I suppose so yes, the spout is def not teat shaped so should be ok am I right?

Thanks both

As its just water i dont see where there should be a problem and if she drinks it and it eases her constipation then all the better.

Mine aren't exactly toddlers any more, but they both have 'magic' cups with water in their beds. Water won't hurt their teeth at all.

Pure water, no probs. Our ds of 4.5 still has one and I find it a valuable way of getting unadulterated fluids down him. Once she's in a bed, and if she has a tendency to night wander, watch out though. Dh was nearly knocked out the other week by ds tossing his sippy into the marital bed at 3am before jumping in himself. A half-full Anyway-Up Cup packs quite a punch.

My ds has started asking for water at bedtime too - he doesn't have an Avent cup, but one where the teat bends over and clicks shut (iykwim). I'm amazed that he doesn't get it over the bedclothes, but he doesn't. I always take a glass of water to bed so I suppose he's just copying !

Both mine have a beaker of water at bedtime too. No problems. Don't know what stage age wise, but if potty training/night time dryness is a concern, ds1 has always been fine with it, as in, no accidents to report!

My cousin had both her front teeth rot out by the time she was 3yo... that was the sort of thing that night bottles full of sugar water did to kids in the 1970s. She had replacement metal front teeth and we all called her "Fangs" (horrible, but true). I don't think there was ever really a problem with the teats, just what went into the bottle!
