I have a recipe for tofu and squash for 6-9 months but didn't know if the tofu I've bought is the normal tofu. It's made by cauldron.

The mindie I look after had a very nasty allergic reaction to Tofu last week. It was only a tiny bit in a risotto.

She is 7 months, she came out in hives, eyes streamed and was snuffling. She was very red, all over, and restless

Doctor gave piriton , but it went down in about 5 hours.

jmum6 · 18/04/2006 17:41

Hmmm thats not good.

Would you know in advance if a child's likely to have a reaction?

It's couldron original tofu. I'm guessing this is the right sort of tofu for recipes.

Are there any others?

We had no idea, there are no allergies in the family and the parents eat Tofu quite often. I don't know if she ate it when pregnant though, I'll ask her.

Thankyou alibubbles

I gave it to dd and ds. I had no idea it could cause reactions!

jmum6 · 18/04/2006 20:55

How old were you when you gave it to them?

OP posts:
Clayhead · 18/04/2006 20:57

I think from about 7 or 8 months.

chapsmum · 18/04/2006 20:59

so sorry if I'm incorrect, is quorn mostly soya based?
If so soya is slightly more alergenic than cows milk, I would probably avaoid as a main dish untill the age of 1. am sure small amounts in cooking would be ok, but check with your HV.

jmum6 · 18/04/2006 21:08

I know they can't have quorn until they're 2 but there are baby recipes with tofu in so was hoping other people had tried it!

dd, at around 7 1/2 months IIRC had mango tofu smoothie, ITH ! She enjoyed it !

chapsmum · 18/04/2006 21:18

hub2 dee that sound delicious, did you try it?

jmum6 · 18/04/2006 21:32

Mmm sounds lovely. Think I will try it tomorrow and see what happens, before I make up a batch of it.

Can you freeze it?

OP posts:
hub2dee · 18/04/2006 21:36

Yep, tasted OK. Yep, we froze. Possibly tasted a teensy bit 'chalky' IYSWIM (that kind of neutralish tofu taste), but the strong sweet mango smothers it. As we're both veggies, dd isn't (at the mo) begin given any meat, so it also helps us ensure she gets a bit of protein too. A nice complement to an all carb meal, or a particularly carb-heavy day !

hub2dee · 18/04/2006 21:38

hey cm, will you join me for a day on our LeJOG tour ? Possibly August.

Smile
jmum6 · 18/04/2006 21:42

hub2dee thankyou!! Is couldron original tofu what you used?

Desparately want to use tofu as I'm veggie but I'm worried ds not getting enough protein although I have given him pureed beef/chicken/cod from heinz mixed with my own veggies. At the same time I don't want to hurt him by giving him something unsuitable.

We eat quorn all the time, never tried tofu. Dp's a meat eater but cooks his own meat - yuk!

hub2dee · 18/04/2006 21:46

We just used silken (firm ?) tofu from the local Japanese supermarket ! I think soft would be better. Can't quite remember what the Cauldron stuff is like tbh... deffo not smoked though, LOL.

hub2dee · 18/04/2006 21:49

I think their protein requirements at this age are actually surprisingly low, compared to our adult requirements IYSWIM. Lots of milk !!!

chapsmum · 18/04/2006 21:50

would love to hub2dee, whats your plans???

hub2dee · 18/04/2006 21:53

VERY vague plans. Go as slowly as possible, LOL. Keep flexible to allow days off to recover / visit interesting things. Worst part will be being away from dd ! DW might visit once a week or sommit.
