I have absolutely no idea what to cook, but my DH can't eat onions, garlic, pulses.

Help please, all ideas gratefully received!

Thanks

Buffet, with Fish fingers garlic bread, curry, fruit and veg, jelly and cream, sort of kids party / adult after beer food, simple to do too.
Oh and some assorted ice cream

womblingalong · 28/12/2012 18:42

Oh, good idea zumo, picky bits would be good, as I haven't known our guests for very long, and am not sure of their likes/dislikes.

Zumo, that is the oddest mix ever. I'd be a bit bemused to be offered fishfingers and curry and fruit and veg on one table!

womblingalong · 28/12/2012 19:43

Probably won't do fish fingers and curry, but will think about a buffet menu. Any ideas Crocodillo for buffet or anything else?

It depends on the age of the kids of course, but do they need to have the same as the adults? You could do pizza for them. A nice, but not too demanding pasta recipe for the adults, garlic bread and salad for everyone to share. You can do a bit of the pasta for the kids to try and if that means they don't eat all the pizza, cold pizza is great at any age on a slobby new year day.

My other suggestion is sausages if you don't mind the smoke alarm going off. Sausages and mash usually go down well at all ages and you can posh it up for the adults with onion gravy (tho not for your partner of course). Buy good sausages from a butcher ideally. Serve with peas and carrot. It might not sound fancy but I don't think many meat eaters complain about bangers and mash on a cold night.

Hope you have fun. As long as they get a glass in their hand shortly after arriving and the nibbles are plenty they will not worry too much about the food.

I would start with a big platter of large Crostini as a kind of starter/nibbles thing. Kids seem to like those a lot for some reason, as they resemble pizza half the time. I would then offer something like chicken drumsticks in a BBQ dip, salmon and lime kebabs, mini bite sized burgers and buns, halloumi and cherry tomato skewers and baby chipolata sausages with a ketchup and tomato chutney dip. I'd then serve a chocolate fondu with chopped up fruit and marshmallows. Delish.

Pizza for kids sounds like a good plan. Sausage and mash too, like the idea of crostini too. What do you think about chicken biriyani and veg curry for he adults?

Am a good cook, but having catered for 7 visitors for a week, have menu planning fatigue!

We're having 4 adults and 7 kids.

I could easily sit everyone round the one table but I'm planning fish fingers and chips (or similar) at 6ish for the kids. Then putting them in front of a DVD while we eat a roast dinner later on.

Roast chicken or a sausage casserole or bolognese work well for all eating together...

womblingalong · 29/12/2012 10:51

Think feeding the children separately is a good idea. Did roast chicken already this week, and want something a bit different that spag Bol I think. Like the idea of sausages and am maybe thinking some Indian food.

Do most people like chicken biriyani, or am I better doing a separate curry plus rice and breads etc?

Get a load of cooked meats, crust bread, quiche, etc and let people pick there own.

Lidl have a raclette on offer - always goes down well.

toomuchpink · 29/12/2012 20:27

Curry sounds good. My kids all eat mild curry (one tsp mild paste with lots of coconut milk) and the youngest two are 15mths.

toomuchpink · 29/12/2012 20:30

PS I sympathise on menu fatigue. Usually when I ask my DH for suggestions he will say "I can't think about dinner now. I've just had breakfast." Which is all well and good if you don't have to work out what you have in and if you need anything from the shops and how you are going to get there with three under four!

We always have a Chinese banquet; everyone gets to sample lots of different dishes.
