Fatty diced lamb - will the fat melt away if slow cooked?

Am really Xmas Angry - ordered 3 packs of diced leg of lamb in my online shop for a lovely lamb curry tonight, and it turns out to be more fat than meat.

In normal circumstances I would take it back, but that's not an option today. If I cook it long and slow, will the fat melt into the sauce? Obviously I will trim it too, but the meat is just so fatty. I know fat gives flavour etc, but I specifically ordered leg not shoulder as it's supposed to be less fatty. GRRR....

The fat should melt into the sauce and give the meat a lovely soft texture. Long and slow is the way to go with it.

Trim as much as possible off but otherwise relax and enjoy a very tasty curry! The fat on meat isn't all bad, there are a lot of nutrients you shouldn't turn your nose up at! The slow cooker does a great job at cooking these sorts of meat too, very tender, delicious results, hey it's Christmas, enjoy!

yy fatty lamb is GOOD for curry! Lean lamb goes tough when cooked for a long time.

Onezerozero · 23/12/2012 13:25

Yes, cook it for ages, it'll melt into the sauce.

I'd personally trim off some of the far. A little is good but I've had lamb before that I left fat on and the sauce was so fatty it practically set around the lamb joint. Vile. If u did it online call up and get a refund. :)

Thanks everyone - I will get on and make it so it has lots of time to cook.

wheresmy I think I will phone and ask for a refund, as I would never have chosen that meat if I'd seen it in the shop. I'm sure Customer Services at Tescos haven't got anything better to do this afternoon than give me a refund Xmas Grin

If it does get too fatty you could let it cool and then skim the fat off the surface. Let us know how it goes. I am sure it will be fine.

One thing I can rate tesco for :) they refund well :o

fatsatsuma · 23/12/2012 16:19

You're right, I rang them just now and they gave me a refund straight away. But I had to throw away nearly a quarter of the pack as it was just lumps of fat - meat marbled with fat is fine, but lumps of fat with no meat attached are not Shock

It's in the oven now, smelling good, so all's well that ends well Xmas Smile
