What can I make other than stew and mince? Ideally I'd like to be able to grab bag of carrots, onions, potatoes etc and some meat and make a few different meals for the freezer. Just learning to cook so my repertoire is currently stew, mince, chicken pie and some more stew...

I love a good boeuf bourguinon. Try Delia though I normally use a whole bottle of wine and some beef stock as well.

ooh that sounds bloody lovely.
A recipe where everyone likes all of the ingredients as well, bonus!
Will cheap wine be ok? And does it freeze well? You are a star, thank you

Yes cheap wine is absolutely fine, freezes brilliantly!

He a browse for once a month cooking or "oamc" and you will find TONNES. I used a book called frozen assets when dd was small and I've lost my copy so about to rebuy. It is American though.

Like many "plans" you have a basic meat mix that you then turn into several dishes.

Also pizza either just the dough or fully prepped then frozen pizza. Budget bytes has some great recipes.

lasagne
think of things where you want the flavour to develop over time, as freezing will develop the flavour. Think curries, casseroles etc.

Thank you all so much. Fab ideas that I wouldn't have thought of, looking forward to a day of cooking tomorrow!

I make a huge batch of tomato sauce using onions, garlic, a kilo of fresh tomatoes and 3-4 tins, plus whatever veg I think won't get noticed by my incredibly picky children: the last lot had carrots, sweet potato and half a courgette lobbed in as well. Simmer until everything is soft, season, add a bunch of basil if you have it, then blitz until there are no more 'bits'.

This can then be used as a base for all sorts of things, from pasta sauces to stews, curries, lasagne, shepherds pie, in quesadillas/toasties - or my daughters will eat it on its own as soup!

Having jugs of it stashed in the freezer and fridge - it lasts for a couple of weeks in the fridge- makes me feel very virtuous, and slightly better about the fact that cucumber and raw carrot and frozen peas are the only veg my sons will (knowingly) eat at the moment!
