So, I have scoured the many threads/recipes for hm but was wondering if there was a consensus? So the final questions are....

Ham on the bone or not?
Cook in coke?
Cook in cherry coke?
Just brown sugar at bottom of slow cooker?

TIA x

Sounds like you need to run some tests and report back Xmas Smile
I shall watch with interest for my boxing day ham.
I'm thinking off the bone, no coke, lovely brown sugar and mustard/ clove studded oven baked ham, controversial in this realm of the slow cooker but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Pizzaexpress2 · 15/12/2012 21:34

Wasn't sure about the cloves.
Mary berry says she does hers about the 21st. Flipping heck, that sounds a bit previous.
Need all thoughts/ experience please.

I always use non smoked (no bone).

Tried the brown sugar/slow cooker recipe recently just to see if better but we all decided that though it was noce we still prefer the coca-cola one, so that's what I'm sticking with again for Christmas.

Never tried cherry coke.

BendyBobsBrusselsSprouts · 15/12/2012 21:39

nice!

Pizzaexpress2 · 15/12/2012 23:41

Thanks. Yes I think we will go for the cola. Not decided on cherry or normal though yet.

I do slow cooker ham by mixing mixed spice with brown sugar, roll the ham in it and chuck in slow cooker. I don't add water as the slow cooker generates enough throughout the cooking. I turn it once or twice and it comes out beautiful :)

coffeeinbed · 16/12/2012 21:55

boiled and then baked with some italian mustard fruit...

Sorry to hijack the thread, but how do you make sure the meat remains appealingly pink? I live in France where you cannot find salted gammon, so I will be cooking from scratch.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/12/2012 18:20

I have asked this on two other threads but no one knows/answered.

Can the brown sugar ham be done in a normal oven?

If not, can the coke ham be done in an oven?

Shesparkles · 17/12/2012 18:23

I have smoked, off the bone. Cook in water, then coat in honey and brown sugar and roast till that crystallises .
I tried the coke method once but didn't taste a tremendous difference. I went back to cooking in water so I could use the stock for soup

wonkylegs · 17/12/2012 18:23

We are having ham on the bone in a Christmas marmalade glaze for Christmas Eve dinner with my dad & his GF but I'm unsure what to serve with it. Any ideas? Sorry to hijackBlush

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 17/12/2012 18:27

Off the bone, boil in cider then remove rind, cover with mustard, cloves and brown sugar then bake in hot oven for 40 mins.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 17/12/2012 18:28

Wonky...creamy mash, broad beans and white sauce.

BirdyArms · 17/12/2012 18:30

I did ham for a big family lunch yesterday. I cooked it in the oven for the first time, rather than boiling, and it was great, so much easier than lifting it in and out of boiling water and every bit as good. I put some boiling water in the bottom of the tray and covered it with foil. 30 mins before the end of the cooking time sliced off the skin, studded with cloves and covered with mustard and sugar.

TitWillow · 17/12/2012 19:28

I find if you slow cook, you get a dryer texture, so I'll be boiling it in water, with peppercorns, bay leaves, an onion and a carrot, so you get nice stock. Then cloves, mustard and brown sugar glaze in the oven. I usually soak it overnight just in case it is salty. On the bone if you can get it.

TitWillow · 17/12/2012 19:30

And I serve with roast potatoes, roast parsnips, spiced red cabbage and cumberland sauce.

LKbabyH · 17/12/2012 20:27

Silly newbie questions alert:
For off the bone ham, are you supposed to take off the stretchy netting before boiling the ham when doing the coke version? How about when doing the glaze bit in the oven?

Cydonia · 18/12/2012 15:00

Can anyone link to a good recipe for using Coke and a slow cooker? And do you have to put it in the oven afterwards or can it all be done in the slow cooker?
TIA

Pizzaexpress2 · 18/12/2012 22:37

Right. Have bought the ham.
So many ideas from you all.
Planning to do it Saturday so time yet to make the decision as to exactly how.
Have always done boil first then in foil in oven with honey and mustard but want to try something different this time, hence the cola.
