Small turkey or big chicken?

fatsatsuma · 14/12/2012 16:55

There are only going to be 5 of us. I love the flavour of a really good quality turkey, but is it a waste for only 5 people? The smallest turkey I can get from our farm shop is 5kg, and I've calculated that 4kg would be ample, even allowing for heaps of leftovers Grin

Would a big chicken be as good? I know one family who prefer chicken at Christmas to turkey. Would a lovely free-range one taste as nice as a turkey? Please help me decide!

We get a turkey even when there's 3 of us. Then we have turkey forever after.

VivaLeBeaver · 14/12/2012 17:21

I always get chicken - only 2 of us here.

Hmmm interesting divided opinion so far. Have provisionally booked a tescos 3-4kg turkey now, but am still pondering.

We've been 5 the past few years, have got a medium sized turkey and none of it has been wasted. Christmas dinner, massive turkey sandwiches the next day (with fluffy white bread and home made cranberry sauce) and then a reheated christmas dinner on the 27th (which I love). Then anything left is frozen and make into curry/pie/soup/nigella wild rice salad thing.

Or get a Guinea Fowl they are just a bit richer in flavour than chicken are about the same size and they're delicious, we're having one because we prefer them.

ppeatfruit · 15/12/2012 16:38

sorry I don't where you'd get one in England 'cos we bought ours in France they're called Pintade here (we're taking ours to London for Xmas lunch with Our DCs!)

VivaLeBeaver · 15/12/2012 16:38

Guinea fowl sounds nice, chicken can be a bit tasteless.

ppeatfruit · 15/12/2012 16:41

fatsatsuma · 15/12/2012 19:05
