Boxing Day food dilemma

Have family visiting Boxing Day. They will expect something traditional (ordinary) and I just don't know what to do. They will have had Christmas dinner day before (we are eating at my parents Christmas Day) they don't have adventurous tastes, I don't want to spend a fortune. Nobody here will eat pork or lamb and the kids won't eat anything stew-y. So far we are just having 3 types of cake. Any suggestions?!!

Quiche, cooked ham, green salad, stuffed peppers with couscous and goats cheese, baby new pots.

Bella the only thing they wouldn't find too adventurous there is potatoes and salad. Dh stupidly hates quiche. But thank you. I would eat it all.

Cold ham and turkey and salad and potatoes and pickles and bread and cheese and quiche for those who like it?

BellaVita · 14/12/2012 13:47

Oh blimey, you are stuck then Shock

How about then making your own chicken goujons and have them with new pots and salad?

The goujons would take only a few mins to dip in egg and breadcrumbs and fry off in a little butter and oil.

The best way to deal with a collection of fussy people who are all fussy in different ways is not to have THIS with THAT on plates, but to have a whole bunch of things that people can help themselves to.

Cold cuts
Cheese
Salad
baked or baby new pots
That's traditional and you can joosh it up a bit for the more adventurous

turkey buffet a la Bridget Jones

mamij · 14/12/2012 13:51

The above, plus bread, dips, smoked salmon.

PoppyWearer · 14/12/2012 13:55

Definitely cold cuts, throw in some salad, bubble and squeak, cheese platter, naice chutneys, pickled beetroot, naice bread and pickled onions. Job done, and leftovers gone to boot!

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 14/12/2012 15:12

Big pot of homemade soup?

Cottage pie?

Allalonenow · 14/12/2012 15:24

Shepherds Pie, great comfort food, cheap, can be made ahead ready to pop in the oven, does not need careful timing.
Or chicken pie, or sausage and mash with onion gravy.

caffeinated · 14/12/2012 15:40

Dh just told me fil is really looking forward to dauphinoise potatoes when he comes. Terrific. Was just thinking cottage pie would be good until then. Back to square one.

Right am thinking roast duck legs (chicken for the picky folk) dauphinoise then I only need to decide side dishes and a sauce??

OP posts:
Allalonenow · 14/12/2012 16:22

Red cabbage with the duck legs and apple or gooseberry sauce.

BluelightsAndSirens · 14/12/2012 16:51

Jamie Oliver does a really easy douphinoise mainly on the hob.

I'd do a baked ham, what about cauliflower cheese? You could make a couple of days ahead and reheat it?

Pâté and baguettes.
