Sandwiches for school party

EndoplasmicReticulum · 12/12/2012 18:03

Well, letters have come home asking for contributions for party food for school class party.

I got the short straw of "sandwiches".

Any suggestions for party-type sandwiches which fit the following criteria?

  1. Partyish
  2. Will survive being taken to school in the morning and then left in the classroom until the party, which is in the afternoon.

Don't ask me why they can't go in a fridge, or be delivered to school later, because I don't know!

Rolls and butter.
Marmite mixed with butter or jam spread thinnly on bread with crusts off. Could cut a few into star shapes if you have biscuit cutters.
Wouldn't put any meat/fish on if in a warm classroom.

Jam! Doesn't need to be kept in the fridge and they always get eaten.

I've been specifically asked for jam sandwiches for dd1's school do. I'm delighted, easy and cheap to chuck together and if I can be arsed have time I'll set about them with a festive biscuit cutter.

I always seem to end up with the butties, I complained about this to another mum who always gets asked for sandwiches too who informed me that apparently if they think your kitchen is probably clean and hygenic then you'll get asked to bring sandwiches, if they think you live in a shithole you get asked to bring crisps GrinGrin. I have no idea if this is actually true but I always take it as a compliment anyway and clearly they have never seen my kitchen

I would put in grated cheese with the tiniest smear of marmite, or jam (nothing like a jeely piece), I'd slip in quorn chicken slices - none will notice.

They can't go in a fridge as I bet there just isn't the room. There certainly isn't at my school. We have one smallish and very very full fridge in the staff room, and then one other fridge in the cooking area - but this is in constant use bu after school club and breakfast club food/drinks. No where to have another. They have to stay in the classroom during the morning, til it is time to eat them in the afternoon.

Parents bring in a whole mix of food, including meat and fish in sandwiches, and so far the children have survived in the years I have been there. Some parents bring in warmed food at lunch time too.

We get told what sort of sandwiches to take.

DS - two rounds of ham sandwiches cut in quarters.
DD - a plate of tuna sandwiches

Am hoping they will get put in a fridge

Hulababy · 12/12/2012 18:19

We have a list on the classroom door and parents sign up and say what they will bring in. We give suggestions but never allocate anything to individuals.

bigTillyMincePie · 12/12/2012 18:20

I bet you can take them in after lunch.

Ham, philly and jam always go down wellWink

OhThisIsJustGrape · 12/12/2012 18:31

I would go for something like jam that won't need to be refrigerated.

We aren't allowed to bring in home made items for the kids Christmas
Party. Shop-bought produce only due to hygiene rules which considering some of the families at school I am quite relieved

EndoplasmicReticulum · 12/12/2012 18:32

Ooh, festive cutters are a good idea, I have some of those. And will do Jam and Marmite so I don't poison anyone. I'm not convinced sandwiches will be eaten, to be honest, as the party will be shortly after lunch and the children will be more interested in wading into crisps and biscuits.

I realise that packed lunches don't get put in a fridge either, but they are at least left in the cloakroom area where it's not quite as stiflingly hot. And letter states "please send food in in the morning".

Would you be allowed peanut butter?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 12/12/2012 18:34

Not Jam and Marmite in the same sandwich, obviously.

Beamur, no to peanut butter, there are children with nut allergy.
