I dont expect any traffic as this is dull on dull dull dull.

Mil is coming for xmas dinner, i just found out.

But shes a vegetarian coeliac. All my tried and tested recipes are meaaaattt!

Help. Anyone? What can i serve her instead of turkey. I would like to look like i tried not chuck a "free from" ready meal at her.

Its so easy but tasty. I was inspired to have garlic mushrooms for lunch dh will be thrilled :-)

Cous cous isn't gluten free unless you buy a gluten free version (they are available, but I've never found one). I have no suggestions, but just wanted to point that out.

BetterTogether · 10/12/2012 15:23

Mmm stuffed peppers sound good, cous cous isn't ok for coeliacs though is it? I like stuffing them with quinoa which is quite similar.

BetterTogether · 10/12/2012 15:24

Ooops tutu beat me to it!

Get a lovely big field mushroom and take the stalk out. Top with onion, spinach and cheese. Drizzle with olive oil and bake for 10-15 mins

Serve with whatever veg you're serving with the turkey

Cous cous is definitely not gluten free but if you like the stuffed pepper idea you can use rice

BreconBeBuggered · 10/12/2012 15:31

You could stuff mushrooms with cream cheese and garlic butter instead of trying to find gluten-free couscous. Only takes a couple of minutes to prepare and about 10-15 minutes to bake. They brown quite nicely but you could grate a little cheese on the top if you liked. Make sure the cheese is suitable for vegetarians. Most supermarket cheeses are, so this shouldn't be too tricky.

Oh thank you so much! I think shes a vegetarian who doesnt like meat texture rather than ethics as she has no problem in rejoicing that bisto best is gluten free.

I was planning on a ham terrine starter but prob should do a soup that everyone can have rather than different for each.

Some of those 'meaty' gravy mixes are actually vegetarian, so don't assume she's being lax about anything else, to be on the safe side. You don't want to go to extra trouble and then find she turns her nose up at some of it.

Tinkerisdead · 10/12/2012 17:56

Thanks i didnt realise that.

Bisto Best may contain gluten and lactose!

I know this because I suffer from extreme non coeliac gluten intolerance and as a result cannot tolerate either gluten or lactose.

Your mother needs to know this. It may be making her ill.

Look at the ingredients and warning here.

"Produced on a line which handles Wheatflour and milk powder."

Peppers are good stuffed with lentils tomatoes and mozzerella.

I did an amazing baked risotto thing for vegetarian option one Christmas meal (not Christmas Day). I have to be gluten free so the stuff I cook is as well so I can eat it! Quite rich but fabulous. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3195/creamy-risotto-layer-cake

CoeliacUK · 11/12/2012 16:37

As correctly stated in previous posts, cous cous is not gluten-free and therefore not suitable for those with coeliac disease.

Cor blimey! I said i'd get no traffic and i get coeliacuk giving me a steer. Thank you all for that.
