Do you cook for lunch?

Had a friend round with her DS the other day for lunch, I'd cooked tuna pasta bake for all of us. She remarked that she never cooks for lunch, usually makes her DS a sandwich or something cold.

So it got me wondering, is it unusual to cook lunch? I think it's nice, especially when the weather's cold, to have something hot. Anyone else?

Do you cook a hot meal twice a day? I'm afraid that would be a bit much for me!

We usually only eat a cooked meal in the evenings, although it actually makes more sense to me to eat something substantial for lunch, as its probably healthier to have a larger amount of calories to keep you going throughout the day instead of having them all in the evening. But seeing as we're both at work this never really happens. I have soup for lunch often, does that count too? Smile

If someone was coming round, yes I would cook. If just me, I often heat up leftovers from the previous evening, or cook some noodles. I do draw the line at making DH's lunch though.

I either re-heat leftovers from the night before or depending on how cold it is, make soup or noodles or a salad or sandwich for the kids and I.

If I had someone coming over for lunch now though I'd probably make a big pot of soup with some crusty bread.

I have something hot most of the time but I wouldn't exactly describe it as cooking. Heating up a tin of soup or beans on toast ect.

I cook almost every day, and sometimes for breakfast too if OH has a day off. I thought this was pretty standard!! Does explain why I seem to have way more washing up than anyone I know Confused

That's it! Sandwiches and a yoghurt from now on Grin

I almost never cook for lunch but did today as we have some leftover lasagne that needed using up.

DCs on the other hand have a hot lunch every day and still manage a cooked meal in the evening.

Yes, I do. It's cold outside and I want to eat hot food too.

We normally eat homemade soup, or pasta or leftover casserole for lunch. We usually have porridge for breakfast to set my 5 yo up for the brisk walk to school and have a homemade meal in the evening too. I'm a SAHM with a 2 yo though and enjoy cooking.

Yes, I do do hot food and I definitely would if I'd invited someone for lunch at this time of year. If it's just me though, it's not really cooking - as others have said, beans on toast, reheat some left overs or maybe homemade soup from a batch in the freezer. My favourite is poached eggs though Smile

My favourite for when friends with DCs come is to let them all make their own pizza. Dough made and ready in the breadmaker then everyone has the toppings they like and its an activity too.

At this time of year I do a hot lunch, not exactly cooking though as its things like soup, beans on toast, scrambled egg, omelette etc My 2 year old is going through a major growth spurt so a sandwich wouldn't satisfy him at the moment!

If we have friends over though I would go to a bit more effort and do something like pasta bake, pizza and salad, chicken stir fry......

Also have a cooked evening meal

ComradeJing · 11/12/2012 06:13

Sometimes. Often of the beans on toast, omelet, soup type meal though. I rarely cook a complete meal from scratch for lunch (like a quiche or stir fry).

Having said that Dd and I usually have sandwiches.

I cook at lunch time whenever I can, at weekends and on holidays. The dcs like it, they are used to a hot meal in the middle of the day at school and it dates back to when they were at nursery when they got a hot meal at lunch time too. But its not just the dcs, it suits me too - I like having an evening when I'm not having to do much cooking. In the evenings we tend to have toast, sandwiches, soup, eggs, cheese, baked potatoes are popular at this time of year, possibly easy pasta dish but nothing elaborate.

But on the 4 days a week when I'm working I cook in the evenings for DH and I and the DCs have tea at their childminders, who feeds them sandwiches or pasta. DH and I often have something ready made to heat up and a salad, we don't have the energy for cooking after a day at work.

One cooked meal a day in this house, that is the absolute maximum I can manage. I sometimes like cooking but hate being a slave to it.
