Healthy breakfast?

I go through periods of eating the same breakfasts during the week then going off it and switching to something else.

I have been having Jordans crunchy oat granola for weeks now. About half a cereal bowl full, with 2 tablespoons of greek yogurt with honey.

It's yum and filling but very sweet. I think it's healthy due tothe grains, dried fruit and seeds etc... but also know that it's full of sugar and carbs.

I'm very active and run most days so need something pretty substantial - what would be better?

Good old fashioned porridge, I make mine with almond milk, spoonful of flaxseed and some prunes love it :)

Thanks, I do like porridge and ate it quite a lot last winter but got bored of it.

Maybe I need to add more interesting things to it! Smile

3 egg white mushroom and cheese omelette, fry off mushrooms, add mixed egg whites, when its ready grate some cheese on one half and then fold over.

Extra lean bacon, poached egg, nimble bread, low fat spread

Organic peanut butter and banana on brown toast, another one that keeps me going for a while!

I like a fried egg (dry fried or a spray of frylight) on wholemeal with a glass of juice/piece of fruit.

vilagegossip If you buy the nice organic large oats and soak in water overnight then cook while whisking; it makes the BEST porridge IMO! I add cinnamon, nutmeg or spices you like, maple syrup or molasses (they are really healthy full of magnesium) and I add some org. soya milk or cream.

I have time in the mornings and am on a real health kick now so I alternate the porridge with a winter smoothie (I'll give you the recipe if you're interested) and sometimes with my own non wheat toast, olive oil, whole pnut butter and yeast spread.

Some tasty ideas - thanks Smile

I love omlettes and do have them every week or so but tend to have them as brunch at the weekend when more time to enjoy them.

Right, going to try soaking the porridge oats and revert back to wholemeal toast - haven't had peanut butter for years frootshoots but that sounds good.

ppeatfruit would love the smoothie recepie please - will dust off the liquidiser! Grin

You could make your own cereal bars? Have a goggle for some recipes.

Muffins, I make lush muffins with hardly any sugar and they're sweet because of the apple and carrot grated in and pinapple and raisens.

Okay Smile Winter smoothie:-

  1. One apple and one pear chopped (wash them and use the skins) You can use peaches, strawberries etc. but I like to eat in season IYSWIM
  1. ground almonds 2tbsps (or more if you like it thicker) I also grind up some linseeds and pumpkin seeds and add to it for great extra healthiness! If you add the linseeds it needs to be drunk with a glass of water.
  1. The juice of half an org. lemon plus grated rind (i usually chop the whole of half the lemon small and add it The vit. C is mainly in the pith of the lemon)
  1. apple or pear juice to come up to half of the fruit in the goblet
  1. 2 or 3 chopped dates and or grapes for sweetness
  1. Fill to the top of the fruit with boiled filtered hot water.

I use a hand held electric blender and blend for longer than you think (this thickens it more too)

villagegossip · 28/11/2012 14:24

Sounds lovely - thanks - think i'll leave the linseeds out though Smile
