Good Italian friends who are always so very hospitible are 'demanding' (in a very nice way) that we prepare something 'typically English'. Any ideas????

Actually, CD - what about apple pie served with a slice of Wensleydale or lancashire on top?

gscrym · 05/04/2006 17:31

Take them to the chippy Grin

scienceteacher · 05/04/2006 17:33

I'd go for a roast with all the trimmings, if it is reasonably formal. Sausage and mash, if it is more casual.

Utopia · 05/04/2006 17:54

I'm thinking:

Canapes: still not sure

(really can't bring myself to do cheese cubes and onions in half a grapefruit!)

First course: Asparagus with Foaming Hollandaise (a la Delia)

Main: Roast Beef and the trimmings

Dessert: Apple crumble with custard

beef wellington. or pie.

or roast lamb: the italians may do raossts but i bet they don't do the spuddies/parsnips/mit sauce etc like we do!

also go mad on the pud: even the french people i know concede that the british do good puddings. summer pudding or spotted dick or bread and butter pud (Jamie does a good version with banana and baileys). mmmmm pudding.

LaSenora · 05/04/2006 18:23

or toad in the hole!

JuicyJaffa · 05/04/2006 18:25

bath chap

TwoIfBySea · 05/04/2006 21:07

Agree with hausfrau, a good shepherd's pie is always a winner.

Frenchgirl · 05/04/2006 21:12

my parents are partial to a good pie, they find it very british and yummy
I think it would be more fun for your friends than a roast

colditz · 05/04/2006 21:12

Fry up with all the trimmings!! can't believe nobody has mentioned the fried breakfast yet! Dish it up at about 11 am, then serve a shepherd's pie or something for dinner.

Dior · 05/04/2006 21:16

Roast beef with all the trimmings. Treacle tart and clotted cream.
